Car Rental Rate game is Driving Me Crazy

Partially my fault for being so anal but I keep checking the rental car rates (I'm currently holding ressie w/Alamo, Budget and Dollar) and Dollar's rate for a compact just went down to $103 (including all taxes and surcharges) for the 5 days!

I think I'm going to drive myself (pardon the pun) nuts, checking daily until our trip...

Anyone else in the same boat?:moped:

i'll join you--my trip is not until feb and i have reservations with budget and dollar for both intermediates and full sizes.

i keep checking it often too

Try not going until next summer and checking almost daily. At least you'll leave in a few months.

I check twice a day..and look at it as a game, you win if you find a better rate..keep checking it is worth the time if you save money....:sunny:

I know in the end I"ll win the rental game but meanwhile, my email inbox is filled with various rental confirmations and cancellations (I find that easier that modifying my existing res so I just start from scratch).

My hardest decision at this point is who to go with...there are pros and cons to all 3 (Alamo, Budget and Dollar).

Wendy, where in VA are you?

That car rental rate game is the Holy Grail for me. Over time, I have saved hundreds of dollars, and made my relatives very happy, who previously thought "it is what it is." I will admit that I am obsessive about it - but it's a small vice.

I have a little chart that I print out to fill in so I can keep track of all of the codes, coupons, categories, etc. I subscribe to the email programs, I check Mousesavers, I read a number of boards to see what people are posting about new codes and their successes. I try not to fixate on the size of the car, or the return locations, if my other travel plans are not set in concrete.

I will make a new reservation to save $4. ...occasionally, I will spend more if I feel I am getting a better bang for the buck. (For instance, I found a covertible for a modest increase when my husband and I went on a special vacation last year. Although it cost me more money overall, I felt it was a much better value.)

To me it is a rush, when I see a price go down. I usually save all of my paperwork, from my first reservation when I start planning a trip months in advance, to my final plan....that's my secondary rush, when I find how much I saved from beginning to end. (Yea - I know - I need to get out more, don't I?)

Maddle

I check almost daily too. And like maddle, I've had to keep track of all my Rental car ID's, codes, etc.

I found that Saturday nite is a good time to check rates. That's when I booked with Dollar. I could have booked with Thrify for $10-12 less, but Dollar is in the terminal and the extra $ is worth it. Plus I just got my FastLane ID yesterday, so now I can call and have them attach my ID to the ressie.

I've got a 2nd browser open checking rates now. They went up the past few days but now they are at the price I booked for. And I'll keep checking until we leave.

While Priceline can be kind of a pain for airline tickets, I find it really helpful for rental cars and (to some extent for non-Disney trips) hotels.

Since you can cancel rental car reservations, I would keep shopping around for the lowest rate until a few weeks before you leave. At that point, I would go to Priceline and enter something well below that daily rate and see what happens.

I didn't want to keep checking rates, so I went ahead and tried Priceline for our Nov. trip. I ended up getting a daily rate of $10... which I had only entered as a test! And it's with National or Budget (can't remember which, but both are good). The only downside is that you pay immediately for it, rather than paying when you return the car (although for us that is a plus, because it helps our budget planning).

i check daily i was getting mad cuz they had been dropping but for 4 days nothing and behold a drop today saved 7 more bucks

I have an intermediate with Dollar, Nov 3 - 8. Started a few weeks ago with a base rate of $127. Thanks to the DIS reminders, using the "MAG" code (Orlando Magicard) I'm now down to a base rate of $96! And when I sent in new credit card information for Fastlane, then sent me a coupon for a free upgrade!

ncbyrne:
If I enroll in Fastlane, do you think they'd send a coupon for an upgrade the first time, or do I need to earn coupons by using them a few times (we don't travel often and do not have any rental car company loyalty)?

Karen:wave2:

As soon as you sign up they mail you (2) free upgrade coupons
SO sign up and take advantage of the great offer

Try using the KISS3 code for Dollar. They give you a bigger discount then the MAG code.

Disney Lover,
I was actually using the BJ's code to get my great rate.
What exactly is the KISS3 code?

Karen:wave2:

I just tried the KISS3 code as mentioned above and the same car is $147 with Mag
and $272.09 with KISS3
That is so ridiculous. The same car, the same dayS.
Do you know if you can use the MAG code and a free upgrade coupon. Some say yes some say no. Have any of you tried it?
Thanks and have a disney day:earsgirl: :earsboy:

I think it's a sweet idea. You wont know if they will do it until you ask. I'm sure they would

I reserved a car at Dollar using the MAG code. I called to confirm and asked about the upgrade coupon. Yes, you can use the free upgrade coupon with the MAG code price.

The MAG code is 10% off any rental. The code comes from the Orlando Magicard. The card is free and you can sign up online. Although I've never heard of anyone actually being asked to see the card, it can't hurt. http://www.orlandoinfo.com/index.cfm?bookingsource=orlandoinfo.com Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to sign up for the card.
The KISS3 code is a specific discounted price for each size car. The code is from the Kissimmee, FL convention & visitors bureau and is for anyone. Both of these codes expire 12/18/04
