Do you ever rent a car during your Fort stay?

We would like to have a car as we have friends in the area that we would like to go and visit. At this point we do not have a toad or tow dolly, we are still deciding what to do in that respect, so we are thinking of renting a car for our stay.

I know Alamo is the Disney rental agency and that they have a Car care center on property. I am also seeing locations at Shades or Green and the Dolphin Hotel. Which of these centers (or which other center) is the closest or easiest to access on the way into/out of the Fort?

Is there a different rental company you would recommend instead? If so which one and which location?

Thanks

I rent right at the airport when I fly in. I have always been able to get a good weekly rental rate. In June I paid $134 for a full size car from Alamo (with taxes). I use carrentalsavers.com. They will list all the vendors for your location. Keep double checking prices as you get closer to your dates. Inevitably they will drop and you can rebook. Don't pre-pay for a car. You can keep multiple reservations at once and then cancel the most expensive as you get closer to your trip.

I really don't know a lot about the other locations. My point is you may be able to score a good rate for your entire stay without picking up and dropping off the car in the middle of your stay.

All sub on the transportation boards. There will always be a thread for rental rates for your month.

We are hoping to get one during our stay in January. We have our truck (since we pull a 5'er), but my parents will be in their new RV and they don't want to pull a car from PA. All of us will not fit in our truck, and we want to go to Kennedy Space Center and Universal. So....

Anyhow, the little reading I have done so far indicates that there are plenty of options in the area, and most will come and pick you up. Alamo is at the car center and will definitely pick you up at the Fort, but you could probably swing in there on the way to the Fort since its by the MK.

We are planning to keep the car for our entire length of stay. We are not flying in, or I would rent at the airport, we are driving our 40 ft. motorhome, so while low cost is good, I want to make sure that the pickup location is convenient to drive the MH there on our way into the Fort, and back out. That is why I thought one of the on Disney property rentals would be the best option for us.

If one of the rentals companies will pick me up at the Fort to get the car, that would be great too.

At the Fort we pretty much rely on Disney transportation, but in normal camping life we're in our first year of a driveable instead of a towable and so far we've rented from Enterprise a couple of times when we needed a car and have utilized their pick-up service. No extra fee or anything, and they've been right on time. It always seems "subject to location" and you can't just book it online when you book your car, but the locations have been very nice about it and we haven't had a problem yet. We are BJ's members and have used the discount code through them, but I'm thinking that Costco and Sam's probably have it too if you're a member - prices have been reasonable enough to have us scratching the prospect of a toad or tow dolly off of our list for the way we travel. :thumbsup2

I was shocked that I went through Costco and the prices were higher than going directly to Alamo. We are definitely getting a toad or a dolly, before we go to Mt. Rushmore next summer. I feel safer flat towing, but none of our current cars can be flat towed so we are trying to decide whether to get a 3rd car, or trade my car in for something towable or just get a dolly.

On several occasions we have rented from Enterprise, which is located on Hotel Row, or whatever that road is called. They would pick me up at the campsite, and when I turned the car in, they would deliver me back to the campsite. I have found their rates to be quite good. The rates can be found online and reservations can be made there. Just be sure to select the right location. :confused3

On one occasion they did not show up at the desired pickup time (or a couple hours later) and I had to rent from Alamo. Alamo picks up and drops off at the Outpost, but after chatting with the driver, he returned me to my campsite.

I would still likely rent from Enterprise in the future. :goodvibes
