Do we need to rent a car? Not only are we interested in DL, but we would also want to visit Legoland & Universal. I would probably in a hotel near DL. I'm assuming most of the hotels provide shuttles to these other sites?

I don't know for certain, but I don't think the hotels near Disneyland provide shuttles to other amusement parks. Legoland is a good hour from DLR. You may have to rent a car or figure out public transportation.

We just spent a week out there - 5 nights at GCH, two nights at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines near San Diego. We left Disney and went straight to Legoland, and that took a bit over an hour.

We chose to rent a car. We only spent three days at DLR. The other days we spent exploring the LA area/Legoland/exploring San Diego. If you are just wanting to go straight to Legoland and straight to Universal, like the PP stated, there are shuttles. But you may find that taking the shuttles end up costing as much as a rental car! We just rented a minivan for an entire week from Alamo for just under $400. It would probably be best to do the math!

We rented a minivan. We drove to Legoland, the Barrett Jackson auto auction and the beach. There are 5 of us, with the cost of shuttles to and from the airport and the few day trips we wanted to do the van was the best bet. Good thing we did because we got a call at the hotel that our youngest had a positive strep test and we needed to get antibiotics.

We flew into Long Beach and rented from Alamo, it was a little over $400 for 6 days.
