Hi Everyone, in need of some advice.

As a Single Mum travelling with my 2 DD 14 & 16 to Orlando Sept 10-29 - I have been thinking about the best way to get around and doing some shopping when we get there, so I ask your opinion:

Public Transport V Car Rental ?

and how easy/hard is it to drive on the wrong side of the road? :confused3

I am a confident driver who has driven for the past 30 years in nearly every state of Aust but never overseas.

The 2 hotels (LRP Universal & SeaWorld Springhill Suites) I'm staying at first have free parking but not sure If I still need a car at 3rd Resort POP Century.

Car rental. The hardest thing about driving in the US is getting out of the rental car parking lot!

Just get your DDs to remind you to drive on the other side of the road.

(think about paying the extra for a GPS if you are concerned about getting lost)

Public transport is not really viable for travel to and from resorts, theme parks, outlets etc. in Orlando and taxis/transfers can add up fast.
For your trip you will almost certainly need a car at least until you arrive at POP Century (parking is free there and in all theme park carparks as a guest). Once you are at POP, if you are ONLY doing WDW and are comfortable being reliant on WDW transport, and you will save a significant amount of money, then you could end the rental there. If POP is your last stay before flying out you at least get Magical Express airport transfers free.

hi there

Pop buses are ok, especially if your not in a big hurry, as they tend to be haphazard in frequency....and are always chocka at peak times.
Mears have services to the other theme parks ie IOA etc...and catching a cab to walmart/outlets etc could also be an option.
magical express from/to airport is great and free.
sometimes using a cab can be cheaper in the long run than renting a car if you only need it a few times.

I would highly recommend going with a taxi over a public bus of any kind. You're on vacation -- saving $30 isn't worth it if it means a miserable start to a beautiful family trip!

I should clarify that if you're talking about taking a resort or hotel shuttle service, in that case I would say go for it. Most of the name-brand resorts and hotels run a very good shuttle service. Besides, if the shuttle turns out to be a bad experience, you have recourse to the hotel management, so at least SOMEONE is accountable to you!

Thanks everyone, I decided to get a car for 10 days @ $450 best rate I could find.
now I won't have to worry about lugging shopping on/off busses/taxis
and a new experience ....
