Hi,

We will be visiting Aulani this Aug (our DS is going for his honeymoon in July) and we are starting to check out the ridiculous price of a car rental for 10 days. We'll be paying for son's too so we are looking for a good rate.

Any suggestions? We want to rent and return to the HNL airport as the cost of a cab to the resort is high.

Thanks

We were thinking the same thing. We found that if you rent a car through the airline you are flying, the car and the airfare is not much more than just the airfare alone, at least it is in our situation. Try renting a "vacation package" then pick air and car only. Its worth a try.

Thanks so much, but we all have our air already. Didn't think of that when we booked.

Has anyone ever used:

Hawaiicarrentals.net

They seem to have the best price so far. They even beat Costco.

I personally haven't used them previously, but someone else here recommened them to me when I posted a similar question about our Aulani trip. I did a Google search of them to see what I could find in terms of personal reviews. I will say that what I found was good. Maybe a negative one here or there but you are always going to find that. So I decided to go ahead and book with them. It was very similar to carrentalsavers where they book for you with an rental car agency. I received an e-mail back quickly that said they had book for me with Alamo. Just seconds after that I received an confirm directly from Alamo with the price. It was definately the best deal I could find. There is no penalty to cancel if I change my mind or find a better deal. So I am going to go with the Alamo car that Hawaiicarrental.net found me.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much. That was what I was hoping to hear. I think we'll do the same. They are so much cheaper and use reputable companies with unlimited mileage and cars with a/c.
The no penalty cancellation makes it a no brainer. Thanks again.

When you say "ridiculous" what do you mean? What prices are you seeing?

As far as suggestions, always keep looking at rental prices right up until you are about to leave for the trip. On multiple occasions, including when going to Aulani, we reserved a car, then kept checking. Almost always the price gets lowest in the week or two before the rental time. We changed our HNL Hertz reservation twice and rebooked the last time just days before arriving. We ended up with a full size for 8 days at $198 total. Just came back from MCO, and re-booked with both Enterprise and Hertz, finally ended up with Enterprise at $124 for 6 days full size. Just keep checking.

Just keep checking.

This is always good advice :thumbsup2 and I completely agree. I always do this when going on vacation and find often that a better rate comes out a week or two before the actual trip. I plan to do this my Aulani trip myself both on my own and through the Hawaiicar rent site.

We have done Oahu 4 times, most recently in December 2011. For this trip, I was shocked at car rental rates initially, but kept checking regularly and book when a fraction of the original quote. For Aulani, you definitely want a car!

Right now prices are ranging from $480-850 for 10 days, compact car. Hawaiicarrentals has the lowest so far. I hate to wait until right before to book because I'm not sure how low the prices go in Hawaii in the summer. We might rent through Hawaiicarrentals now, because someone said there is no cancellation fee, and just keep checking as everyone has advised.

I think that is a good plan. It is always best to have something, it easy enough cancel if you find a better rate. As I mentioned before I will continue to check on my own and then will also have Hawaiicarrentals do another check a few weeks out.

Good Luck, keep us posted. :goodvibes
