Just wanted to thank you all for all the fabulous tips you post on this board. I've been lurking for quite awhile reading all your tips and advice, soaking everything up; and we're headed to DL next week
I'm not sure if you realize how many people you help out that are "lurking" but never actually post anything. I sure do appreciate the time you spend maintaining it so moochers like me can glean some wisdom from you
I'd like to post a list of things we're bringing for our 18 mos. DS to make a 12 hour car trip do-able. You had a great thread that gave me a ton of ideas (that i've now lost); this is probably mostly a summary of everyone else's ideas from multiple threads, with a few of ours thrown in; but i thought it would be nice to repost all in one place for easy access.
We're splitting the drive into two days of 6 hours each and starting at 5am so hopefully our little guy will sleep at least half the time. We got one of those soft carseat trays (Fisher Price Precious Planet) and it's great to put snacks and toys on. I'm bringing a big goody bag of things to keep him occupied. It includes:
-a keyring I made for him (found a cute mickey mouse key at walmart and lots of cute keychains at dollartree (mini tape measure, laserpointer, etc. Think I'll leave it in the car after Disneyland so he's not always stealing my keys!~)
-an old wallet filled with fake credit cards (those ones you get in the mail...) and cardboard money. He's always stealing mine so i figured i'd make him his own wallet too
-i-spy-bottle (i think somebody else posted this idea awhile back- just a little sprite bottle filled with rice and various little knick knacks for him to find. I found a bunch of things at the craft store) He's too young to really search for anything but he can shake it and will have fun discovering all the objects in there
-smarties (our grocery store gives these out at the check-out and i LOVE them because it takes forever for his little hands to pick out each piece. great time waster. same goes for tic-tacs and those little boxes of raisins)
-Pooh play-a-sound boardbook (target)
-mini slinky
-mr. potato head
-vtech toys (walmart and target sell them- they make a baby laptop, car driving simulator thingamajig, etc. They cost about 13-16$ and my DS will play with one for HOURS. sometimes i leave one in his crib after he falls asleep for his nap... keeps him entertained in there so I can finish my shower... hoping it will work in the car too!)
-mini magnadoodle
-magnifying glass
-toy camera we got on clearance at walmart after easter
-soft activity book we usually bring to church (velcro, zippers, buttons, etc. mostly my ds pulls everything off and throws it on the floor...
)
-pop links (taking them out of the container and putting them back in kept him entertained for an hourlong cartrip last weekend
)
-CARS sticker book + crayons
-finger puppet board book (Gap sells them for like $6; my DS loves them!)
-lollipops (gas station has the smartie ones that turn to powder on your tongue- so he wont get sticky)
-mm clubhouse, nemo, cars, pooh, and monsters inc. for our car dvd player
-also bringing jumbo bubbles and a blow up mickey beachball to play with at the rest stop on the way
We're also bringing lots of snacks and drinks... and of course- earplugs
