Wow, my husband got a speeding ticket awhile back and our car insurance went up almost $500 per year! I new it would go up but had no idea it would be this much. I'm going to be more careful about my speed from now on as well. Does anyone know how long this will be on his driving record? I've never had a ticket so I don't know.

Wow that's steep...have you tried shopping around for a cheaper company when the term expires?

No, maybe I will. I've had this insurance since I started driving (16 years), I also have life insurance and home owner's insurance through them. He's listed as primary driver on 2 vehicles and they raised the rate on each vehicle, I pay it monthly and it went up $26 per month on his truck and $12 per month on our old Accord. I wonder if I can change the Accord and list me as the primary driver, though that only saves $12 per month.

You should list whoever has the better driving record on the most expensive car and the other person on the older car. After getting married we changed and listed my husband on my truck and myself on his older car and this saved us alot of money as I had 2 tickets on my record and he didn't have any. The insurnace company didn't mind or say anything about the change even though I had owned my truck prior to the marriage and the company had to have known I was driving it as well. Knock on wood-- for the first time in my driving history I will have a clean record in March- my last ticket drops off then!

How long does it take tickets to drop off?

$12 a month is $144 a year...if it's worth the hour of work you have to do to call your insurance company and sort it out then by all means go for it

Some states have a program where you can take a course to get the points from a ticket wiped off your record, and reduce your insurance by at least 10%, have you looked into that?

For our insurance company; 39 months. In some states however, Speeding Tickets become the Gift that Keeps on Giving. I believe that Massachusetts allows a surcharge. You probably could get a felony conviction off of your record quicker than a speeding ticket. That is why I have the philosophy that if you get a speeding ticket, plead NOT GUILTY to have it reduced. If you feel personally guilty about pleading not guilty, donate the difference in the original ticket to what you had to pay to charity. If you don't, it will cost you a lot more than that original ticket.

I have 9 points- :confused3 limit is 10 and you lose your license.

Here, the points come off according to the police after 3 years. But they only come off your insurance record when they update their file. This could be done yearly or not depending on how often they pull your record.

I got a 3pt ticket, in March of 04, my insurance company didnt pull my record until July of 04, so it went up then....they may not pull my record in April of 07, so it will stay on until they pull it again and realize its cleared.

Oh swell, DD just told us that she got a speeding ticket when she drove home for her sister's wedding a week and a half ago.

I can't wait to see what our increase will look like.

I got a speeding ticket about a year ago. I was able to take a online traffic saftey course so the ticket wouldn't show up on my record. I would look and see if your state offers the same thing.

Keep in mind the increase in what you pay may not just be a rate increase, but also a loss of discounts. I would shop around and see if you can get a better deal. Car insurance can be cancelled or rewritten pretty easily... Oh - and how severe a ticket also impacts the amount of points charged.

That's another good point. I'm not sure how it works in your state, but you may be able to fight the ticket and get the points and speed you were over by reduced which will also help with the insurance.

the rate can also be due to additional tickets & claims already accounted for on the policy. this new ticket most likely dropped your good driver/premier discount or added a surcharge which can be significant. another thing is the severity of the ticket like another mentioned. the rating & such will vary by state. tickets & accidents show up on your mvr for 7 years but affect your insurance for 5 years with most insurance companies.
