Car hire - credit card hold?

My 21 year old son is going to Orlando soon with friends and renting a car. He does have a credit card but it only has a small £1,000 limit.

I read that car hire companies take a "swipe" of your card when you collect the car, and block out some of your available credit. Does anyone know how much this usually is?

We've rented cars on all our trips in the past and I can't for the life of me remember what amount they took (if they did at all )

i have never given a credit card as we dont have one. the first time i was 21 when i went over and i had the most expensive insurance with dollar the platinum insurance and was asked and i just said i dont have one and now they dont even ask as i'm on their system.

Ive always used my CC but Ive never heard about them putting a block on a certain amount. I always pay upfront for my tank of petrol so there should be any other charges put onto card.
