I am going to stay at POFR Sept 2007 for 3 weeks. I didn't hire a car last year because of worries about getting lost, but I have just brought myself a tomtom sat nav system. As I can get a map for Florida for it would members hire a car for part of the holiday or is being a lone female too risky to travel in a car alone.

Slightly different ~ The last three times I have been to Orlando I have travelled with my mum. We are usually going to Disney, Universal, SeaWorld and the shopping Malls. We have managed just fine. My mum doesn't drive, so it is down to me. I wouldn't hesitate to drive on my own. If you are a confident driver in this country and do not intend to travel to much off the beaten track, I would say go for it.

Can't see why it would be any different to driving in the UK - just use the same rules and common sense and I'm sure you will be fine :)

This is perfect sense.

I would have no problems driving alone in Orlando - just like driving around in the UK. I would central look the doors when I get in the car (although that is generally not advised on motorways), keep my handbag in the passenger footwell (not in view on a seat) and keep my mobile phone charged and handy.

Hi,
As DH suffered a stroke and several fits over the last couple of years, I have to drive everywhere now, never used to and wouldn't say I was that confident in the beginning. 2 years ago on our first visit to orlando I was very nervous and armed myself with several maps, but I managed fine. One tip is to plan your route in advance and remember the road and junction numbers, they don't give much advance notice of an exit road off. Last year I ventured to Kennedy Space centre, and even left the family and went off to walmart on my own. I find it much easier to drive in orlando than here, plus there are no gears to worry about, just concentrate on the right hand side of the road!!

BTW we're going sept 07 to POFQ too!!

Thanks everyone i think I will hire one for a few days, I want to go to Busgh Gardens and do some shopping so will buy myself a copy of the Florida map for my tomtom. How a sat nav system works I will tell you tomorrow as I am going to Warwick lets see if, for once in my life, I can get some where without getting lost.

:lmao:

Yep, another female who would be happy to drive alone here :thumbsup2

Need my 'TomTom' tho as I'm absolutely no good at map reading but that's the same wherever I'm driving ....... :upsidedow

Have a great time :woohoo:

At a guess, it would be much cheaper to add the "Free car hire" with your holiday, if that is still possible.

I understand hiring a car out there is very costly when you add insurance to the costs. Just use it whenever you want to.

It cost us £99 GBP for insurance last year for three weeks.
