Car got broken into last night

Sorry that happened to you. It happened to me once. All they got were a couple CDs of Christian music, just what every thief wants. It was a pain getting the window replaced that they broke though.

If they broke into mine they’d get some dog towels, a few crumbly (and likely stale) crackers (that help me stay awake when tired), $3-something on a Dunkin’ gift card, a quarter for my Aldi’s cart and some gum.

I worry about the damage to my car that what they would cause, because there is nothing of value left in my car.

I learned my lesson 30 years ago when my bag phone was stolen from my truck. Thieves got caught within hours so got the phone back, but they used a can opener to remove the lock from the door to get in. Expensive to fix.

I leave by doors unlocked for that reason. In my previous neighborhood they had a string of car break-ins during the summer last year. I make sure nothing is in it & just leave it unlocked.

Years ago our neighborhood had some thefts, but they only stole from unlocked cars. No break-ins. I was hit, but had nothing of value inside.

They broke into my sister's car once in the mid 1990s and took a CD player device that wouldn't work since they cut the cord (her car only had a cassette player and this was a CD player where you inserted a cassette device into the player to get it to work, apparently the thieves couldn't remove the cassette since the car was off so they cut the cord) and a CD folder full of Civil War and Broadway music. It probably ended up at the bottom of the creek next to the rental property.

My car got broken into once but they didn't take anything, just smashed the front passenger side window.

I leave mine unlocked because the total value of the contents is worth less than the cost of replacing a broken window or damaged lock. All they'd get right now is my emergency $5 bill, a purse-size hairbrush, an almost-empty chapstick, a freebie bank pen, and some extra fast food napkins. If they hit the under floor storage in the back, they'd also get my $10 travel first aid kit, a beat up old beach towel, and one can each of sunscreen and bug spray. Some nights, especially this time of year, they might even get lucky and nab a hoodie.

Around here there have been a lot of catalytic converter thefts lately. Doesn’t take long to cut them out apparently.

Ours were hit 3 months ago (along with many others) inside our secure and monitored under-ground parkade. They took my office keys and both our garage door openers. It actually hurt my feelings...and that seemed like a weird emotional reaction. :sad1:

I lock my doors and don’t have anything inside. And have an alarm. You want to mess with my car? You get to work for it.

And there are a couple different levels of sticky fingers.
The ones that hit unlocked cars to see what they have inside and on occasion may try to take one for a joy ride.
Then there are the smash and grab really popular around the holidays with merchandise in plain sight.

Same. I leave it unlocked. I run to the store after work, I leave it unlocked. If someone wants to steal my dirty lunch containers from lunch that day, I'd rather they not break a window to get them.

That's the bigger/more costly problem around me too. There have been a couple of incidents where people came out after a sporting event, concert, etc. to find a whole row of parked cars had theirs stolen and there's little you can do to prevent it unless you just never park in an unsecured lot.
