Capturing Stills from Super 8 mm film

I am transferring VHS tapes onto DVD's that were shot In the 50's using a Super 8 MM video recorder.

My question to the group is in regards to what software have people used in order to capture a still image from the moving images in order to make a print and to then make a photo album/book.

I don't know how many fps Super 8 video uses, but let's just say with even 12 fps with a low res video will not print well in terms of a quality res.

Has anyone used a software successfully which captures:debwalk: still images from a video and then be able to print that saved .JPG or other file format image?

You're capturing from the tape? THere's many ways to do this, the simplest is a screen shot. But no matter which way you go you're unlikely to get decent print quality images from VHS. The resolution just isn't there on standard VHS (it's actually a lesser quality format than the film) and if it's aged at all it will be even worse. However, if I were to do it I'd grab the frames with editing software like Premiere.

Now... if you have the original 8mm film then scan it. With a good scanner you should be able to get high enough quality to make nice prints and enlargements.


The frame rate for 8mm varies from 12-18 FPS, by the way. But once it's been transferred to VHS that's kind of a moot point.

Thxs . . . i would be capturing the stills from DVD.
I am not sure if I still have the original 8MM tapes.

It doesn't matter if it's on DVD at this point.... if the source for the DVD's is VHS and not the original Super 8 film then the quality is still going to be VHS quality.

Time to search for the Super 8 MM film if its around.
