I have read the menu for here, but can anyone tell me what they have are the clams and mussels just steamed, do they not have like stuffed clams or fried shrimp, for it to be a clam bake, there sure isn't much seafood listed.
thanks

We were not impressed with it at all. My DH who can sit and eat this kind of stuff all day only ate a small amount. I have heard others say that they like it but we were just not that impressed.
I will say there were other thingsthat we did like and I really liked the sweets table :goodvibes

We went a few years back and were not that impressed. The seafood was mostly steamed and rather bland. The selection was good just not that flavorful. Let me say however that we are from the New Orleans area and are used to much spicier seafood.

We loved CMC a few years back and were excited to return in January. Big disappointment. Very little seafood available these days. I hated to see one of our favorites turn into one of our least.

My DH and I ate there on 9/25. The only seafood they had was steamed mussels, clams, and shrimp. I think they also had salmon. It was tasty but we probably won't be going back anytime soon.

And the seafood isn't really all that good. Cape May is a great buffet, but stick to the American favorites side (ribs and pasta), and get your seafood fix somewhere ELSE.

Not to hijack someone else's thread (sorry), but for those of you who didn't like it (pretty much everyone)-- do you typically like steamers? I love steamers-- prefer it to anything stuffed, fried or baked. I actually love oysters raw too? I'm just wondering if the food wasn't really good, or if you just don't care for steamers (I'm sure alot of people might consider them bland). I was hoping to try CMC in January-- now I'm wondering if I should switch to another restaurant.

I love steamers -- that's the main reason why I don't like Cape May Cafe! :rotfl: I don't do raw oysters, though.

Ok Thanks! That's too bad! I think I'll change our ADR.

How much are you looking to spend?

blueZoo $$$$ has been getting great reviews. And Flying Fish $$$ is excellent.

Coral Reef $$ is very good as well.

Fulton's $$ is okay.

Other restaurants have special seafood menu items which are notable, like the Portuguese Stew at Spoodles $$.

I think what you will find with this thread is the folks who are from seafood rich parts of the country; Maine, Mass, Louisiana, New England states will not like Cape May in general because of the quality of the seafood.

Being from Indiana we don't have good seafood. By the time it gets to us in the midwest it has been picked over and is no longer fresh. I find the seafood at the clam bake to be delicious and it probably has to do with my expectations of seafood.

Agree or disagree, but that's how I see it.

My understanding is that Cape May has a new chef within the past few months and we just tried it recently and were pleasantly surprised.. We did try it many years ago and being from the Boston area, not that wowed...we gave it a second chance and enjoyed it. I think we should watch this restaurant as I believe there may be some exciting changes coming with a new chef....as there are always when they make a chef change.

I tried Coral Reef, was not impressed, did not like Flying Fish and would never go back there and agree with ADP.....we who live in the areas where good seafood is plentiful do expect more from seafood restaurants when we eat out..

I like the Cape May Cafe. There is one seafood section on the buffet bar. Usually there are several kinds of fish. The pick and peal shrimp is on the salad bar (although the shrimp isn't that great. they need to use the pick and peal shrimp like on the cruise lunch buffet!) When we go, I usually get the soup, fish, then the rest of the stuff from the American bar side or the kiddie bar. I also like the desserts.

I am really the only one in my family who eats the seafood at Cape May Cafe. The rest of my family really just does the other side. I like the clams, don't bother with peeling the tiny shrimp and think the rest of the stuff is very good. I also have ordered crab legs (they cost extra) and they were very yummy and steamed perfectly. We are doing Cape May Cafe in about 2 weeks-our first night tradition. I'll do a report when we get back. I'll be interested to see what the new chef has done! :)

I had read many of the bad reviews on this board before we went, but kept the ADR anyway. We live in NY, and frequent Old Country Buffet and a few different chinese buffets, so our standards and expectations are not too high. Plus, we had the free dining, so even if it was mediocre, it was free! I am not a huge fan of steamed fish, but definetly enjoyed it. The mussels (or was it clams) that was steamed in something other than water tasted better than the plain mussels and clams. You also have to be willing to take the time to take the suckers out of the shell! I guess the pina colada I had didn't hurt my enjoyment of the meal!

I'm from Indiana and I thought Cape May was bad on my last visit. Actually, I would have rather went to Red Lobster. Maybe "bad" is not the problem, no variety. After all, it is Florida and I think I have consumed my weight in good seafood along the Florida Suncoast. Oh, and if you want good seafood in Indiana, try Oceanaire. Fresh seafood flown in daily. It is wonderful!

I've been to Oceanaire...It's not bad if you want to pay $300 for two. As you said it is flown in daily and you pay for it. And I am sure that they don't send the better seafood to the midwest and keep the mediocre stuff in New England. Why do you think the oranges in FL taste better than the ones in Indiana?

Personally, I'd rather be in New England where it is caught and delivered to you within 12 hours.
