Hi Everyone!

Well, I'm a Massachusetts person who has been to the Cape numerous times over the years....but not for the last several. (We've been going to Maine, Block Island and this year Hilton Head.)

I have 3 kids who are getting to the age where they would love to have a friend come visit us while we are on vacation for a few days. With that in mind, dh and I thought the Cape might be good for next summer and are thinking of renting a place for 3 or 4 weeks. We would take our two week trip there and then he would commute the other week or so and the kids (and us) could have friends come stay for a week or a couple days. We are thinking of splitting the cost with my sister and her family ...that's how we could do 3 or 4 weeks.

So...I'm looking for a place/location that would be good? I was thinking the Town Neck area of Sandwich but haven't been in a while. I want a location that has a lot going on, but not right on route 28. I like the idea of the canal, bike path, beach boardwalk, shops in town, etc..

Also wondering if anyone else has done a monthly rental or could recommend a place?

Any suggestions/advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks so much!

oops! Thought I posted on the community board! Mods...feel free to move!

I don't know much about Sandwich but we LOVE Popponessett in Mashpee. It also bumps up against New Seabury. Poppy is a quaint little area with a beach within easy walking distance (7 minutes max). There is a small shopping area with a bar, restaurant, mini golf, country store, bike shop, ice cream. The bike riding is great, the streets aren't busy, there is a lake for fishing. I just adore it. Mashpee Commons is only a 5-10 minute drive and has lots of nice shops. Falmouth and Hyannis are only 20-30 minutes away and have great downtown areas. The bike path in Falmouth is also great, parts go right along the beach.

Walking to the beach is the best part for me b/c we don't have to pay to park or wait in line to get into a parking lot.

Most of the houses for rent have their signs up all summer. We went down in March and grabbed our place. But you can go and explore now and see what you'd like. There is a mix of smallish coattages and bigger houses so there are price and size options.

We enjoy staying at Ocean Mist in South Yarmouth. We like the rooms with the loft. The kids love sleeping up there. Also a small kitchen sink, dishes, etc. Private beach along with an indoor pool.

We love love love south yarmouth! Everything is right there all sorts of activities Never rented a house so can't help there. But love south yarmouth

Hi

Just adding my two cents! I have a sister who has a house in Falmouth, and we have been going up for 10 years now. Lots of family members with all age ranges from infant to 21 years old. I like the area so much that hubby and I are planning to buy a place and eventually retire there. Lots to do, great town center, a trolley that goes from Falmouth to Woods Hole (National Oceangraphic Institute is there) so kids could go out on their own. We love Old Silver Beach, can drive anywhere on the cape easily from there. There are bike paths, great beaches, restaurants, shopping, bowling alley and movie theaters, kids theaters, flea markets, greenmarkets, etc. There a fun day cruises to take with kids or without, out of Hyannis and Woods Hole. Also great aquarium in Woods Hole. Not to mention Smitty's Ice Cream in Falmouth, the best on the Cape.

Mashpee Commons is also a fun shopping center with a pottery place, movie theater and tons of restaurants and stores.

I guess you can tell how much I love it. Check it out, Foley Real Estate is one place that we have rented from over the years.

Have fun, I am envious, 3 weeks is the most I have stayed. I hate going home each summer. Looking forward to retirement.

I love Sandwich especially Town Neck. My parents had a summer home on Knott Ave for years. My husband and I were looking at a house to buy in the Town Neck area this year. I love walking the canal and the boardwalk over the marsh. Sandwich is such a nice quiet town on the Cape but I must say the kids might get a little bored.

Check out the Corsair and Cross Rip in Dennisport:

It is my DD 13's favorite place to stay. They have houses for rent, suites that include kitchen/kitchenette, and regular rooms. They are beach front, have two pools, indoor pool and game room, gas grills, etc. Everything you could need. They are also close to several great breakfast places and Sundae School (ice cream!)

or try the real estate professionals at Duarte/Downey Real Estate in Truro. They have over 600 rentals from Provincetown to Chatham with a wide range of choices from secluded to water front.

I grew up on Cape Cod and my parents still live there. I am partial to the Mid-Cape though. The south side of Dennis is great for what you are looking for. There are some excellent restaurants and ice cream shops.

My suggestion on renting a place would be to go through a realtor.
I know one who could help you his name is Nathan Small with Today Real Estate. His email is nsmall@todayrealestate.com. I have no relation to him, I just went to high school with him and he has lived on the Cape his whole life so he is very knowledgable about the area.

If I'm staying in the cape I usually stay in Hyannis or welfleet. If I was going for two weeks I'd probably spend at least 2 nights in Nantucket or the vineyard. Also don't forget to hit the Welfleet drive in I love their popcorn its so yummy and you can get dinner at the wicked oyster for sit down or arnolds for something more casual.

Thanks Everyone! Will check out all your suggestions. I now think a road trip might be in order!

I live here, and although I cant really help with places to stay, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask. I agree, visit Sundae School for ice cream and Kream and Kone in Dennis for fried clams, the best! Love the bay beaches here in Dennis, and also the ocean beaches in Eastham and Wellfleet. Lots of nice walking trails too and the rail trail extends the length of the Cape for biking.
