I have noticed that tipping is a VERY controversial subjest on here. It's almost as bad as religion and politics!:rotfl:

I have been flamed so many times because when threads ask "what do you tip", I say "On average 20-25%, because I have been a waitress and know how hard it is, you get stiffed daily and I feel for the waitresses who get the people who think it's ok to leave nothing while they are busting their butt to keep them happy." Or better yet, one guy said they make enough money already...so it's ok to stiff them?:rotfl: Priceless!

I didn't say that anyone else had to tip that, I said I did. Geez! Don't eat me!:scared: I'm just voicing my opinion. People on here can get downright venomous!

Don't worry. For some reason many people think their own tipping policy should be everyone's. Just like religion and politics -- as you said. :)

I got attacked when I wonderd why people "need" turn down service..I just asked why they can not turn their own covers down.Everyone workd hard for there money..I tip well also I understand most waitress only make 3 or 4 dollars a hour plus tips which they have to divide.:hippie:

So why did you start this thread? Its a controversial subject, so I think I'll open it up again because obviously, we need to hash it through again?

LOL... I tip about 20-25% as well. It's personal for me too, I have never been a waitress but my grandmother was. My grandpop got TB back in the 50's and had to be quarantined so my GM was forced to return to work to support my mom and her three sisters (All were under 12 at the time) She worked really hard and they really depended on those tips during that very hard time.

Everyone in my family tips big as a result, it's hard work and a good waitress deserves a good tip! but thats just my two cents ;)

Your right though, ppl get heated about alot of things on these boards... which is why I find myself taking a break from them from time to time. There are alot of tolerant open minded ppl as well though here, it's just like real life so don't let it spoil your opinion. :goodvibes

:rotfl2: Agreed...like people NEED someone to turn the covers down for them... do they need someone to tuck them in, too?:rotfl2:

And to the posters who asked why start the thread, because I wanted to:) It may be controversial, but it's very interesting to me how people can let an individual's opinion push them over the edge. Just wanted to get other peoples opinion on the subject and see if anyone else has noticed this trend.

Don't worry about it, I bet you get excellent service as a repeat customer!!!:thumbsup2

I do, that's part of the reason I tip so well. Someone on another thread said something that i'll always remember...quite clever and fits to a T. "TIPS means To Insure Prompt Service". Couldn't have said it better myself!

To truly get people riled up, you have to be more specific, like I tipped 25% while nursing my baby at the table of the restaurant that I had chosen out of the 6 dinner ADRs I had made so I could have my pick and sharing my buffet meal with a child who got in free because I lied about their age while character hogging and I ran my double stroller that I did not pay for, I just took from a ride and ran into 66 ankles on the way here. Did I leave anything out?

:rotfl2: Don't forget that you pulled your kids out of school for the trip and they have *gasp* unexcused absences!!!

My hubby just looked at me like I had three heads and when I read it to him, he didn't get it... :rotfl:

People on here can get downright venomous!

They have internet courage. It's easy to say nasty things to people that can't see you or can't show up at your house. A lot of these people wouldn't say it to your face. It's like the guy who becomes a cop because he was picked on in school. The gun and the badge now gives him courage. The anonymity of the internet is their gun and badge.
Disclaimer: I am NOT saying that about all cops. There are some great cops, but just like everything else, there are a few A-holes too.

Wow. This is a really good one. I was a waitress at Hard Rock Cafe while I was in college and with that being said...I tip depending solely on the service I get. I noticed last year when we had the dining plan and some of these people KNEW they were guranteed 18% they could care less how they treated you while others went out of their way to do everything they could to make your meal enjoyable. One night at Coral Reef we had the rudest, most hateful server you could ever imagine. She rushed us to order and told us what to eat and demanded our drink order immediately. (The place had just opened, we were the first table so there was no excuse for this behavior.) Things went from bad to worse (drinks were slammed on the table by her spilling all over the stuff we had sitting on the table) as she asked us to place our order and again went on to tell us what we should eat. By this time we'd had enough. My husband got up and went for the manager. Meanwhile another person brought the apps out and literally slammed those across the table. I could not believe this. We had been at Disney already for 8 days and saw nothing like this! The manager tried her best to get us to stay but we opted to go to Garden Grill instead. Needless to say people like THAT do NOT deserve a penny. I think this is why Disney took the tip out of dining (that AND they were losing money because servers were forcing extra apps and desserts on people to up the bill.) No matter how bad a day I was having I always left it at the door. I NEVER took it out on a customer and always made sure drinks were filled, plates were removed, and everything was "right". Disney is hit or miss. Sometimes I encounter the best people in the World and other times I get the idiots that assume it's their given right to get money from you for doing nothing. Tipping is supposed to reflect service you are given. When it's good 20% (sometimes more if you really like the person) but if they only give you 40% you should definitely adjust your tip to meet the service. Eventually the BAD ones will get a clue or leave and get a job more designed to their ability. BTW the good news at Coral Reef...there was 5 of us (me, hubby, baby, and two young kids) and we had been seated at 2 different tables right close to the aquarium...the manager talked to my hubby for a really long time so she lost out on our tips since we left and wasn't able to turn that table for a good hour or more. The manager told us to sit and relax if we wished 'til she got us the ADR over at GG. The waitress was so mad and I let her know what kind of server she was not! We made a complaint later that night as well at Guest Services. (First one ever at Disney...we're the people who go to GS to compliment people!)

It's so true! Pretty sad that we have to put disclaimers in our threads/posts...:rotfl2:

And I know it sounds horrible, but sometimes it's kinda funny to watch those particular people tweak out when someone doesn't have the same opinion as them. Drink a beer, take a valium, something! Geez!:scared:

We got horrible service one night at an Olive Garden where the waitress was almost exactly like the one you had. I was blown away! She was waspy with my then 2yr old when I asked for a drink refill and snatched my plate out of my hand when I sent it back because I had chunks of shell in my seafood pasta. She looked at me, rolled her eyes and said "What, you can't just pick them out?" WHAT?!?!?! OH NO, YOU DID NOT JUST GO THERE! :rotfl2: That doesn't even begin to cover how rude she was.

I made a point of telling her I wanted her name and that I wanted to speak to the manager NOW. She walked away muttering "Man, I got ALL the b*tches tonight!".

When the manager came over I told him everything that had occured and how we would not be coming back there again. I made a point of telling him that while she might be having a bad day, I was also a waitress and would never even DREAM of treating a customer like that and continuing to have my job after. He profusely apoligized and told us not to worry about the bill. After we got home, I was so mad that I wrote a letter to the corporate office and 2 months later got a letter back with 2 $50 gift certificates in it! I gave them to my Mom & Dad for their Anniversary...:rolleyes1

We still haven't been back there.

Servers like that are the reason the good ones get the attitude...:headache:
