So I have an 8 night stay booked at CSR for 12/8-12/16.

Our family tends to do Disney on the early schedule. We like being at the front of the turnstyles when the parks open, doing early character breakfasts, etc. On the flip side, we usually try to get back to our room by around 8 pm because DS and DD get very cranky if they don't get at least 9 hours of sleep (and it takes at least an hour or so to get them to sleep once we get back to the room). In that regard, we've never stayed for Wishes, Fantasmic, or Illuminations.

However, on this trip I'd like to do all 3 (have already bought MVMCP tickets and reserved a Fantasmic Dinner Package). But I still want to get to the parks early as per our usual itenerary.

In addition, we'll be treating my parents who are flying in from the West coast. While my dad is a morning person, my mom is not, and is not super thrilled about getting up any earlier than about 7 am (especially coming from the West coast). So she'll be a pretty unhappy camper if told she needs to be at a bus stop by, say, 6:45 for an 8:15 character breakfast.

Because of all of this, I've been tempted to switch to a Poly/BC split stay, mostly from a convenience/location standpoint (would allow us to sleep an average of about an extra half hour most mornings and get back from the evening shows at least 30-40 minutes earlier - we dine deluxe, so it would also allow is an easy commute from our room to and from the restaurants, and I've already made the appropriaate ADRs). But the price difference is dauntingly steep (especially when you're talking two rooms).

We could, as an alternative, stick with CSR and rely heavily on cabs but I've never been thrilled about this option (partly because our party size would likely require us to take separate cabs and partly because I'm a purist who worries that this will somehow detract from the totality of being "immersed in Disney").

The discount situation complicates things even more. If free dining were to start on 12/8, I'd probably stick with CSR because a moderate resort + free DDP (upgraded to DxDP) for your entire trip is a lot of bang for your buck at Disney. But it doesn't tempt me quite as much with FD starting on 12/10 (and we've already purchased our flights), even though we could still presumably get 6 nights of FD by doing a room-only for the first 2 nights.

When room discounts come out for December, the picture will clear up somewhat but I'm honestly not expecting anything better than 20% at Poly and 30% at BC (based on what we've seen so far this year). No matter how you slice it, a Poly/BC split stay is going to be thousands more than CSR.

I guess part of my dilemma is that I've stayed at CSR before (and liked it) but have always dreamed of doing a Poly/BC split stay. While we have the financial resources to do it, it just seems imprudent to spend that much extra, especially when my main motivation is location, convenience, and trying something new and fanciful (my father, in particular, couldn't give a hoot about the difference in room size/quality or club level amenitites).

Another part of my dilemma is that we probably won't go back to Disney in 2013 (and will likely never go to Disney again with my parents). So there's this part of me that says, "c'mon, you only live once and can afford it, do the Poly/BC split stay (and hope for some decent room discounts)." But another part says, "go with CSR with FD for 6 of the 8 nights, it's by far the best deal you're going to get from a purely financial standpoint."

Decisions, decisions . . .

How would you lean in this situation?

We struggled with that decision this year. We will not return again probably until 2014, and didn't go in 2011, so we splurged again for the Poly. The sheer convenience and location make it worth the extra IMO. We will not have to use the minivan all week. To have immediate access to the monorail, for us, is HUGE. I sort of justify by thinking we won't be going back for a while.

We are going for our first trip with our kids who will be 5,3,and 22 months next October. My mother and mother-in-law are coming as well. We are booking a tower theme park room at CR. We decided to go all out,because my mother hasn't been since I was a little girl,and she has never stayed on property or eaten at a table service restaurant. We also want to make our kids' first time special.
I do know that CR has suites on the Garden side of the hotel that might make it cheaper than booking two rooms.
As far as the situation with your night owl...that's probably something she's going to have to deal with. I'm a night owl myself, but when you're in the minority you don't want to make everyone else miserable because you start the day later.
As far as paying more for a monorail resort...I would say if you aren't going next year and your parents don't usually go,why not make the change. Staying that close to all those incredible food choices is great and convenient. Not to mention if you stay at CR with a theme park view you can watch Wishes from,your room if the kiddies are too tired.

There's a decision in between the two: How about the WL? It's more expensive than CSR, but far less than any of the monorail resorts. You'd be much closer to MK and there are more transportation options. Just a thought.

The year we splurged for the Poly really changed how I look at WDW. It's my favorite resort and anytime we have the funds to stay there we do. I think since this trip might be a super special one since your parents will be there with you it's worth the pinch on the pocket. The added convenience of the monorail and boat will make a huge difference. You could also come back to the room for naps if your kids wear out during the day. Not only that if your mom or dad want to head back to the resort it's an easy hop from Epcot or MK.

If there's FD I'd stay at the same resort the whole time if there's not and only a room discount or something then you could stay at the Poly and do MK and AK on those days then move the BC for your DHS and Epcot days

We're taking my inlaws for their first trip ever in December and we're going to stay at the WL. I'd LOVE LOVE to have the funds for the Poly but at Christmastime I'm just as happy at the WL. That's always an option if funds are a tad tighter since it's cheaper.

I always say if you can afford it, go for it. If that is what you are going to enjoy the most and not feel inconvenienced, do it, especially if your parents may only get to go this one time.

I wouldn't want to have to take a cab or 2. The thought of all those bus stops at CSR has kept us away. Check out POFQ, it only has 1 bus stop and is close to MK, Epcot, and a boat ride to DTD. It's a small resort and very quaint and peaceful.

DH and I stayed at BWI in January and it was wonderful and so convenient to all the parks. We loved walking to Epcot or boating to DHS. We took the boat to YC one evening for dinner and walked to BC one morning for breakfast.

We took my cousin, her sister and her 3 children to WDW in Dec 2008 and they spent most of their park time by themselves and Dh and I went our way and did our thing and met for TS meals, it was really nice that way. They didn't feel like they had to do what we like and we didn't have to slow them down. DH and I stayed at AKL and they chose Pop for the kids.

We are doing a split stay for the very reason you suggested. I would really think about it and crunch the numbers to see what works best for you.

I would not want to have to rely on cabs (that costs money too).

Have you considered renting DVC points? I know it makes you ineligible for free dining, but it might be a smart move otherwise.

I would definitely splurge for the Polynesian! You will LOVE the convenience. You can go early to the MK and then come back to the Poly for a nap or swim and then go back to the MK at night. The MK at night is a MUST do! That way your parents can come and go as they please and enjoy the easy transportation (monorail or boat--which is fun).
We have done split stays where we stayed at the Polynesian and did the MK and then switched to the YC and did Epcot. (In the end I wish we had just stayed at the Polynesian but our trip was much shorter than yours). Don't forget at the Polynesian you can easily walk over to the TTC and catch the monorail over to Epcot. Polynesian's concierge lounge is wonderful too and I'd recommend it for long stays as you can just go in and grab snacks and drinks (we do breakfast there too and sometimes dinner!). The worst part about the Polynesian is that it is costly and you get addicted. Good luck planning!

Well, I just wanted to throw this into the mix... have you asked your parents how they would feel about packing everything up and moving to different resort mid-stay? Some people like to stay where they're at the entire time. Just a thought. :)

Although we love CSR and will be there part of your dates, if you can afford it, I would definitely do a split stay for convenience. I can't comment on the Beach Club as we've not yet stayed, but we love the Poly.

As a previous poster mentioned, have you thought of renting points? I looked into that for our December trip which is a surprise for my DH's 60th birthday, but nothing was available--but we only needed a studio; you might be able to get a one or two bedroom.

Thanks for the input.

I've thought about staying at the Poly the whole time (and am somewhat worried that the BC may be a bit of a let down because the plan is to stay at the Poly first). In that regard, if I had to pick only one resort, I'd probably choose the Poly for many of the reasons you listed.

But the split appeals to me for a number of reasons:

(1) About half of our dinners are planned for MK area restaurants and about half are for EP area restaurants;

(2) We get to experience two resorts for the price of one trip;

(3) We really want to check out SAB (even though it will be December - we're from upstate NY and enjoyed the pool area on our recent February visit to CSR when temps were only in the mid 60's);

(4) We like the idea of being able to have a 5 minute walk back to our room after Wishes and Illuminations;

(5) We're huge fans of Cape May's breakfast (which is sort of a pain to get to if you're not staying in an EP resort);

(6) the split is somewhat less expensive (especially since room discounts at BC have recently tended to be better than those at Poly).

We have stayed at a couple of deluxes but never a monorail or Epcot resort. But we have stayed at WL and dh prefers CSR over WL. I also do. So not everyone's favorite is a deluxe. There are certain things we didn't really care for during our deluxe stays.

My point being you won't know until you try it. The prices of the delxues have me doing some of this :crazy2:. The is our biggest factor at times also is price. I'm not really willing to shell out over 1000.00 more for a room for 11 days. I have a hard enough time paying for a moderate when we could be staying in a value for 500.00 cheaper.
