Can't change a reservation on line?

We have a 2 br reservation for next week at SSR. We wanted the Epcot resorts but, even though I called exactly 7 mo in advance, there was nothing available (it had never happened to me before!!). We have been waitlisted since and today the waitlist is no longer in place. Our only chance is to stalk the website and see if something becomes available.
My concern is that, even if I see something available, I cannot make changes online. I have to call MS to be able to do that but what if something becomes available while MS is closed? I can't believe that, after all the updates at the dvc member site, we are still at the mercy of MS by phone!

You can cancel a reservation online but you cannot modify a reservation. If you want to drop just a few nights from your SSR reservation you will have to call MS.

You would have to cancel the existing reservation and book new just like MS does when you call them.

You can't "hold" inventory as you make the switch but most MS Advisor's don't have that ability either.

Yes you can cancel and book new, I have also done it many times.

Though you can cancel existing reservation (the entire thing) on-line and then make another, you have some risk of losing both if you need to use points from the initial reservation in the new reservation. You cannot lock in the second reservation and use points from the first one without first cancelling the initial reservation. You have some risk of losing the new reservation to someone else between the time of cancelling the first reservation and locking in the new reservation.

I always though MS had some way to do things differently and that's why you had to call them for modifications. If they don't have that ability how are people able to "walk" their reservations by adding and dropping nights as has been described in other threads here?

Modifying a reservation is different than canceling a reservation and making a new one. Changing resorts would be a new reservation, dropping days at the beginning or end of a reservation would be a modification.

Yes, exactly!
I'm assuming the chances of something to become available for us at this time are zero! :)

As I posted, contrary to popular belief MS does not have the ability to hold inventory, they lose reservations all of the time. It has happened to us using MS.

If you are just a month out from your reservation I wouldn't take the risk of cancelling to change even if I found what I wanted available because inventory can change in a second and you could end up with nothing even if MS does it.

To the OP good luck! I understand !

HOWEVER -- to all members the bigger issue is MS not being able to hold a block of rooms for a short period of time like 15 minutes.

I had MS Identify a block and before they could modify / borrow an existing reservation the targeted rooms got taken. Not only is this frustrating but a huge waste of resources for both myself and MS when I call 5x a day for a week or two to try to achieve my goal .

One can do this if you have enough points. Just book the second and cancel the first. It's one of the advantages of having more points and planning early in the UY. This is also one of the issues I have with ALL changes not being a cancelation and rebooking, it creates both an uneven playing field AND a lot of inconsistency. The reality is that there are those at MS that can hold the new reservation if they know how to do it and are allowed. I'm not sure what level of management is required to do so.

Hi,
I called this morning to change one of my reservations.
i had 2 reservations, one for AKV Standard view for a week and one AKV Savannah view for a week. Today was my 7 month mark and i wanted to change my 2nd week to the BWV, so i called at 9 am and they are able to simply CHANGE/MODIFY reservations.
You can not do this online, other than reserving the new one, then cancelling your previous one (if you had enough points to do so).
good luck!
