Canon S3

Since when do wings curve up like that on the end? Or is it just the lighting and the angle making it look like it curves? (Or maybe I need to fly something other than good old USAir??)

:scared1: That looked like the tail of a plane to me too!

Well, it's taken me all day to get through this thread, but I made it! ;)

I currently have a Kodak Easy Share Z740, and I'm looking into purchasing either a Canon S5 or G9. I've only used Kodak Easy Shares, but after having to replace it every 2 1/2 years, I'm done. I need something that will last longer.

I'm interested in the Canon because of the Face Detection and the Optical Image Stabilizer - which seem like they would make the camera easier to use.

If you've used Kodak in the past, can you tell me what your experience is with switching brands? I sometimes use the manual settings on the Kodak, so I know some of what your talking about in your posts, but for the most part, I'm either an Auto or a Scene kinda gal.

Thanks for any help - so many of you have a wonderful "eye" with your photos, and the Canon S3/S5 really seem to complement that.

Well, we were just getting ready to land, so maybe it just goes up like that then? They also mentioned the plane was only a month old so maybe it's something new? :confused3

Theres actually quite a few planes designed like that;) its permanent, they don't move and definitley not the tail.

LOL, Amy! That was our wing, we were in the last row! :rotfl: If we'd have been that close to another plane I would have had my head between my legs and been kissing my you-know-what goodbye, not been firing shots off! :lmao:

For everyone who's interested, that little upwards flare at the tip of the wing is called a "winglet" ... and it reduces drag and improves fuel economy. :thumbsup2

Here's a USA Today article about them
....

Thanks for posting that link, Stitch! Guess we'll be seeing those wings more often.

When I tell DH about something new that I learned, he just shakes his head when he hears that I heard about it on the DIS! :disrocks:

Thanks for the technical explanation, Stitch! I've never heard of winglets before. I was just looking out the window and thought it would make a nice picture. :thumbsup2

Has anybody purchased a slave flash for their S3? If so what brand and how did it work out for you.

Do any of you have a lens adapter/lens hood for your camera? What is it for? Is there something you can get (a filter?) to put over the actual lens to keep it safe (so it doesn't get scratched or wet)?

Thanks

I got one for Christmas, and it's nice. You can put a filter on, either clear or UV to protect your lens. Or you could try to get fancy schmancy with some of the other filters out there. I'm willing so sacrifice a smidgen of light for the extra protection in crowded/busy areas. Mainly because I'm a total klutz!

I wouldn't rate it a must-have, but I'm glad I got it :thumbsup2

Hi...Can I jump in and ask if they fit the S5 as well?...Sorry to intrude.

I have a 52 mm adaptor a bought from www.lensmateonline.com for my S3. Fits very well. On the end of this I put on my wide angle lens. I also use a UV filter, and occasionally use a neutral density filter. All purchased from Lensmate.

These products also fit the S5. Just look under the S3/S2 area.

Another recommendation for Lensmate.

I have a 52mm adapter for my S3 and I use it for filters (UV for protection, polarizer, etc), a Raynox DCR-1540PRO (T/C) and a Raynox DCR-250 (macro).

It works great!

I'm going to get my S5 on Saturday, it's $60 off at circuitcity.com! :cool1:

I'm going to get a battery recharger, but I was wondering how is the battery life? do you carry extra batteries with you? My dad saw a charger that claims to charge them in 15 minutes, does anyone have that?

I easily get 300-400 pics (with occasional flash and a fair amount of reviewing on the LCD) from a set of 2600mAh NiMH AA's.

When we took our trip to Disney last Sept., I had three sets of batteries; one in the camera, one in the bag and one on the charger back in the room.

I generally use these batteries from Batteryspace.com, and I use their "smart" compact charger, too.

The only problem with 15 min. chargers is that they "exhaust" your batteries, and you'll get far fewer recharge cycles out of each set of batteries. However, AA NiMH's are cheap so it's really a matter of cost over convenience....

Battery life has been excellent on both our S2 and S3, which I'm pleased about since that's what prompted me to dump my last camera. I carry an extra set with me but only need to change them on rare occasion, and I take lots of pictures. I use the Canon rechargables.
