I was in north central Kentucky last night - and I was so excited to see such a bright moon, and when we got out of the car and I had my camera ready, I saw the clouds. LOL. It was a bizarre sky, for sure.

It was very bizarre - and it kept changing so quickly. I went in for the camera because it was so bright, and when I came out it had taken on a whole other look - then the clouds came back, but it wasn't ever as cool as when I first went out - which was when it looked like your photos! It just had this wierd glow about it! And then I couldn't hold the camera still to save my life, so everything was really blurry!!! Keep posting - I love seeing what everyone comes up with during their day!!

I have Duracell 1800mAH that came with a travel charger. I purchased them on sale at Target for about $14 or so last November. They seem to hold up really well for me. A normal Disney photo day for me is anywhere between 100-250 photos with my S3.

That's a nice moon shot! I've not had much luck getting the craters to show - I think I need to cut back on the exposure a bit - they are always blown out.

I cropped this to get rid of excess branches, but did nothing else. DNephew took this picture this afternoon while we were doing a hike for his Enviormental Science merit badge. I told him he should do the photography MB too.

Madge - those are awesome moon shots! What settings did you use? I tried a moon shot a couple of months ago, but mine didn't turn out very well at all.

I've joined the S3 club! I just got my camera on Sunday night. I'm still testing it out . . . and have read MOST of the book. Anyway, just wanted to ask . . . what setting are all of you putting your camera's on to take all your pics?!?! My pics aren't coming out as good as the one's I'm seeing on this board. I've been testing out the color accent a lot (very cool) and am having lotsa fun with it, but my regular pics (flowers, etc) aren't as nice as the one's posted on this thread! Do any of you have any "quick tips?" I have just a little bit more to read from my book, but I think I'm better off getting "hands-on" tips from other S3 users (like how you should use sports mode for fireworks . . . instead of the SCN fireworks mode). Anyway, quick tips will be GREATLY appreciated! . . . and soon I'll be posting my pics here too!

I have the Everyready Energizer NiMH batteries. 2500mAh. A 4-pack at Target was $9.99.

They easily last over 400 pictures taken, plus downloads, Plus viewing on the TV.

Best batteries I have ever owned!

We are in Hawaii on vacation and you would not believe how brilliant the moon and sky look here at night!!! Anyway, I know someone had posted their moon photos a while back, but couldn't find them using search. Can anyone tell me what settings I should use to shoot the moon?

I enjoy shooting the moon. I usually just search out other moon shots and see what settings they use. From there it is just trial and error. And believe me, I haven't even come close to perfecting it yet!!!!

it's best to start with sunny 16 and then go down from there. iso 100. f/16@125

I've taken more moon shots since those in the S3 Pics thread, and have had better results with full moons than crescents.

I use a tripod and AV mode (letting the camera pick the shutter speed), and set the aperture to 8 (as small as it will go; this helps reduce CA/PF) and switch to Spot metering so the camera will see all of the available light from the moon -- it's very easy to overexpose the moon.

If it looks too bright in the EVF/LCD, I adjust the exposure compensation to -1/3 or -2/3.

Also, zoom to full optical zoom (digital doesn't look as good) and manually set the focus to infinity.

Most likely, you'll have a pretty fast shutter speed, the moon is very bright; but if you're shooting a cloudy moon and the speed is slower, use the 2-second timer to eliminate the camera shaking on the tripod from pressing the shutter button.

I've gotten some nice moon pics handheld, too; but the tripod ones always look better.

Fireworks tonight. Plan on using Fireworks mode with Gorilla Pod set up of railing on pier at harbor (ack) or Night snapshot or sports. And in continuous shooting to hopefully catch the firework at the right moment.
