Canon S3

For future reference, you should say "Canon S2" or "Canon S3". There is actually a Fuji S2 dslr and Fuji S3 dslr which people usually term the "S2' and "S3".
Must have missed your post before. Didn't realize that, will do. And thanks for the information.

I've also seen it displayed as S3 IS on other boards, but that might be just Canon-specific ones in which case S3 would have been OK, anyway! :)

Just ordered a S3 IS (and you bet I'm gonna be posting ALOT of pics on the S3 thread). Through all the discussion regarding this camera, I saw and used the link to Lensmate. I have some filters for my film Rebel (58mm filter size) and I would like to get the 58mm adapter so I can use them. Have any of you S2/3 owners ordered/used the adapter? Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I have an adapter (not lensmate but very similar) for my S2 IS and I love it. I think I got it on beachcamera.om for about $15. I use it not so much because I use filters, but because it adds a little protection for the lens assembly. I never take it off the camera and I know if I bang into something, or say, the camera falls off the car :) that the lens itself will not be the first thing taking the hit.

I have the 52mm lensmate adapter for my S3, I leave it on all the time mainly for protection and occasionally I put a filter on it.

I have the 52mm Lensmate adapter on my S3 with a Hoya UV filter for protection and a lens hood for shooting in bright sun. I'm sure the 58mm is just as good (and have read that it is on other sites, too).

[EDIT]I just got a Circular Polarizer, today! :thumbsup2[/EDIT]

The Lensmate one is *very* well made, fits perfectly and mine was delivered (standard delivery) two days after I ordered it.

My wish list includes a Raynox 1.54x TC, Hoya or Raynox Macro set and an NDx8.... ;)

I too have the 52mm lensmate for my S2... It NEVER comes off. I like it because of the extra protection, plus I can add my polarizer occasionally...

Then there is the other big plus - REAL lens caps! I understand the slip-on cap to protect the mechanical stuff if you turn on the camera with the cap on, but having a real clip-on cap is so much better!

BROKE!!! Went to take pictures yesterday and when I turn on the camera, the lens will not extend and just grinds and grinds and then the camera shuts down. I tried it several times and the same thing keeps happening. I did notice that on the screen it gave me an error code and of course couldn't find it in the book....On to the Canon website I discovered that Error code E-18 means that the lens has been jammed when trying to open or that there is dirt/sand inside which has caused the lens to act this way.....

I am sick about this! I take extreme care when using this camera and it certainly has not been in a position in which the lens would be prohibited from extending and I have not taken this to the beach. I haven't even taken myself to the beach!

Luckily, I do have the extended warranty which will repair or relpace the camera. Aarrhhh!!

I know it will be taken care of, it's just that now I have to take or send it in and wait. I'm not good with waiting!

Thanks for letting me vent......

Hi Sparky. I too have the Canon S2. I haven't had the E18 error message yet but I have read about it on other sites. Here is a link to one site with some possible solutions:

Hope it helps.

E18 is a lens extension error and while it can be caused by a mechanical malfunction, something as simple as a low battery can do it as well. Be sure to explore other causes an simple fixes before sending it in to be repaired.

I have a Canon S2.

I went to get it out for trip this weekend and discovered the lens extended as if the camera was on. I changed the batteries, no response. The Camera does not turn on or off. Any ideas? (I am currently charging the SLR battery for this weekend!)

Try putting in a set of batteries you know are fresh, and hold down the power button for a few seconds to see if that helps

I will give it a try, but I get the feeling I have to attempt to send it for service.

Thanks!

I am waiting for mine to lock up too.[/QUOTE]

ohh - don't say that!! I have an S2 also and we're off to Disney in September - I would just break down and cry if that were to happen!!! :guilty: I really enjoy this camera, and am praying nothing happens to it for a very long time!!

Thanks Dan,

I am not sure what is going on. I don't get any error messages (I get NADA LOL!)

I found a repair place here in Atlanta that I am going to go visit next weekend and see what they think.

I have never had any problems with my Canon DSLR and it's considerably older. Who knows?

Update!

After reading some posts on the forum you linked me to I decided to give it ONE more try. One post I read said to leave the batteries out for several hours to let the thing completely drain ? Anyway since I had not had batteries in mine since Thursday night I picked up a new set and put them it and it worked!!! The thing came on, the lens moved etc. (However, I can't finish testing it, I can't figure out where I put my cards during the upheaval Thursday to get the SLR out and charged LOL!, but I think it's fixed!)

THANKS!!!

The focus capabilities or lack there of on the S2 is driving me nuts. So many shots missed due to the yellow box showing up. For landscape shots anymore I just put it on manual and set it to infinity.

So anyway I wanted to get the 30D but heard possible the replacement for it might come out this fall. Anyone else heard that?

I dont want to get it then have the replacement show up a month or two laters.

Shoot, if I had known that, I would have offered to buy it from you - I just bought one the other night!

Sounds like you're ready for a DSLR. ;)

P.S. I'm really loving my S3 now, finally. It took a while but most of my shots now are coming out really nice. Could there be something wrong with your camera?

Possibly there might something wrong, but not sure.

Yeah I have been ready for a DSLR for a long time. I currently also have a Canon Elan 2e SLR. I got the S2 cause I couldnt afford a DSLR at that time.
Although maybe I should have just moved up then cause the S2 is driving me crazy. :confused3

In certain situations, the S2 has a hard time focusing. This, I believe, is due to the fact that they only gave it one central focus point. This was the ONLY thing that annoyed me about the S2. Overall, the focusing is fine, but in situations like the landscape shots you mentioned, I also noticed that it would have a tough time with the focus. I just ( a couple months ago) got used to the manual focus on the thing and now I have a 30D :cool1: . However, I wouldn't get rid of my S2 for anything. It has done me very well considering the price and it was the perfect choice for me at the time. I would keep it for the video alone! I know I will.
