Canon S2

the pictures I posted is a side-by-side comparison of each camera (but at higher ISO) from dpreview. I only created the middle row by using Imagenomic Noiseware freeware edition.

I personally would choose grainy pictures that is sharp rather than very clean picture that's blurry as heck.

another thing: Panasonic is too eager in using their noise reduction for their high ISO shots. Here are the samples of Canon's high ISO noise, Canon's high ISO noise cleaned using a freeware, Panasonic Lumix high ISO with their auto noise reduction (can not be turned off)

Images on the extreme left and right are taken from dpreview showing ISO 400 (or is it 800) performance of Canon vs Panasonic. The image in the middle is cleaned by myself using Imagenomic Noiseware freeware.

i don't mean this as overly critical but what good is the panasonic at that quality...maybe they look better in person in a normal sized shot? but i'm loading that freeware now..

it's okay to see those pics at 4x6 print, but no larger than that. On the other hand, at 4x6 you'll hardly see the grain on the Canon either.

FZ5 and FZ7 uses the same sensor design and the same Venus engine noise reduction algorithm so the result would be exactly the same.

I got the S2 from Best Buy... it was 378.00 plus I had some reward zone coupons. Also I used my Best Buy Card so its no interest for 18 months(probably paid off in 3)

Did lots of research, purchased it just this week and then found this board on my beloved DIS.

Looks like lots of you have a fondness for this camera too. :thumbsup2

I really haven't got much past the "AUTO" mode and I'm LOVING IT!!!! :goodvibes

I'll have to figure out how to post images here (and I will), but in the meantime I'd love to hear your input on fun things you've discovered with the S2.

Cool, we just got the S2 for marcie. Get a big memory stick and shoot in the highest quality mode. It is worth it.

Let us know how you like it after a few pics! I'm considering the S2, the S3 and the Rebel XT. I just can't decide!!! :confused3

If you have the budget, go with RebelXT. Once you go dSLR, there is no turning back. why?

1. Virtually no shutter lag
2. Faster AF
3. Larger sensor = better image quality especially at high ISO (so far up to ISO 3200)
4. Choice of better quality lenses and specialty lenses

What is the best price you have seen the S2 going for now? Target has it for $349.99 but it seems i saw it cheaper somewhere else last week.

Does the pop up flash take a while to get use to? I'm use to auto everything & will probally forget to put the flash up the first few times. What is the best way to deal with the lens cover that is loose?

I take the little strap from the lens cover and put it over the side of the lens and then put the cap over that. Probablly not the best solution but it works. I try not to do it over the glass so it doesn't scrach. Just remember to remove the lens cap before you turn the camera because the lens won't extend properly if the lens cap is stuck on.

I've used www.buydig.com -- a sister site of Beach Camera, with identical prices -- and have been very happy. Great service, great prices, no tax, free shipping. Who could ask for anything more? :thumbsup2

I ordered a Pentax dslr on a Thursday, and it was supposed to take 8 business days to arrive. Imagine my shock when it arrived the next Monday. :teeth: (Of course, it helps that their warehouse is just across the river in Jersey...)

Meanwhile, this place: http://www.butterflyphoto.com/shop/home.aspx has it listed for $319. That's about the cheapest I've seen.
