I've been in the market for a while and can't make up my mind. What do you think?

(I didn't know we had a photography board until a minute ago. :) )

I have it, and have been very happy with it. Cannon just announced it latest version, the XTi or 400D, so price will most likely start to drop as soon as the new version hits the shelves.

The top two are Nikon and Canon. Canon has a larger market share. Both are very good. I chose the Canon Rebel XT with the kit kens
Canon 28-135 IS
Canon 70-300 IS
Canon 50mm f1.8
but that has been aquired over some time
I would reccomend (for either brand)
lots of extra memory and an extra battery.

Good luck, check out www.dpreview.com and steves digicams for good reviews

The digital rebel is an excellent camera. Canon also has a great range of lenses both in price and in focal length and aperture. As mentioned a new version has been announced and is due out in the middle to end of October. Its a 10.1MP and isn't much more expensive than the 8.1 rebel.

Also consider the Nikon D50. Its only 6.1 vs 8.0 but the noise at higher ISO's is a bit better as is the auto white balance. The D50 has spot metering, 350D (aka XT) doesn't. Its a little less expensive as well. Also regarding lenses Nikon has a slightly better selection for the "average" user looking for only a few all purpose lenses. Nikon has an 18-55, 18-70, 18-135 and 18-200. Canon has an 18-55 and 17-85, thats about it for the wide angle starting zoom (at least in the 18-??? range, unless you count the f/2.8 lenses that are much higher priced {both Nikon and Canon have those}) Sigma makes an 18-125 that is available for both companies. Both also have a 70-300 with VR and IS respectively (Vibration Reduction for Nikon and Image Stabilization for Canon).

You really can't go wrong with either one.
Happy shopping.

We've got a 300D and have just ordered a 400D. Very good cameras, and whether you go for the Canon or Nikon is really down to personal choice, 2 very similar cameras.

Some good prices around for the new 400D/XTi depending whether you are in the UK or US:

Cheap US site

Cheap UK site

So, Rebel XT kit w/ 18-35mm plus 75-300mm and 3gig microdrive for $985 + tax ($1074)

Good or Bad?

Well considering that you can get the XT kit(with 18-55mm lens) for $700 no tax and free shipping from Beach Camera.

IMO paying over $370 for the 75-300mm lens and a microdrive does not sound like a great deal to me.

Right now you can get the BODY only for $600 from them, and apply that extra $100 towards a better lens. There were times that he kit lens only added like $40 to the price(body only VS kit), at times like that of course you buy the kit lens. But when it adds $100 to the price I would skip it.

The microdrive has moving parts! Some have never had problems. I personaly stayed with CF. Many months ago I paid $130 each, for two 2 gig ultra III cards. They are cheaper now, I thnk.

I can not comment on the 75-300, no info

you're kidding, right? best buy normally has the highest price you can find -- list price.

if you want a cheap deal you'd want to go somewhere like b&h photo or amazon.com or newegg.com -- but pre-orders are usually at list price. the prices at these places WILL drop after the cameras start shipping (best buy won't).

All relative I guess, looks cheap compared to what we'll be expected to pay in the UK:furious:

It is cheap compared too what you pay in the UK. However, once the cameras are shipping, Best Buy will keep the camera w/lens at that price but Amazon, B&H, and Beach Camera will knock $50 - $100 off of that price. The only advantage to Best buy for most of us we can go pick it up at a nearby store.

My local Best Buy price matched B&H photo
they checked the price, then added $20 for standard delivery for my final cost. Plus taxes which go to my town, and it was still cheaper than their original price.
But they do also price match any advertised price for 14-30 days from purchase. I got a $200 check two weeks after I bought a sony camera.

Don't forget to consider the Pentax line, especially the very inexpensive ist DL (sometimes as cheap with lens as $430 or so after rebate) or the new K100D with image stabilization, which can be had for $600 with lens. Excellent cameras with great image quality, plus ergonomics that are often preferred over the Canons and Nikons.

Of coure, all the DSLRs will give you excellent results and you'll probably be happy no matter which you end up with. But don't forget that there's more out there than the ***on stuff. ;)
