Canon mirrorless

Where did you see it for $250 if you don't mind?

Re: the kit 14-42 on a MFT system....

Do I have it correct that this the equivalent of 28-84mm on a full frame and then about 18-53mm on a 1.6 crop?

so basically if I want to know how a MFT lens measures against a crop I can multiply the MFT mm by 1.25 or divide the crop by .8.

so much math. :worried:

Something about Canon's mirrorless screams niche (photo enthusiast). You don't see too many consumer cameras without a built in flash. Are they counting on accessory sales or taking a chance?

It's not too unusual in the mirrorless camera market to not have a built-in flash. Many M4:3 models, Sony NEX models, Samsung NX models, and Nikon 1 models don't have built-ins either...I think they are all going for maximum compactness with a larger sensor, so the flash is the first to go.

The only difference is that all of those companies include a compact, special-made flash in the box with the camera, whereas Canon seems to see it as an opportunity at least in the states to churn a little more profit by selling it separately (it seems in other countries including Canada, a speedlight flash will be included with it...just not in the U.S.).

Ah! You're right! I forgot about a lot of those models. And they were successful. I rarely use a flash even with my s95, but I will say that when I need it, I really need it. :)

Don't quote me but I thought m4/3 was a 2x crop. Canon is 1.6x and Nikon/Sony are usually 1.5x. But it's been awhile so doublecheck my facts. :) Butm4/3 is smaller than Canon's.

I'm looking for where I saw it for $250. I know it was a technology deal on 1saleaday.com recently and maybe even on Woot.com. I'm checking my buy.com emails as I thought I saw it there too. I see it's currently $290 on Amazon.

Olympus 4:3 and Micro 4:3 have a 2X crop factor.

If anyone's thinking of purchasing the Oly E-PL1, I recommend trying to find it with the two Zuiko kit lenses 14-42 and 50-150. I have this set up and it gives you a good range to start. The lenses are quite small, and the 14-42 lens is even retractable, which makes it fairly small and portable. I agree, even though it's an older model it doesn't mean it's not a good one. We just got it last Fall. BTW it does have a built in flash.

That sounds like a nice setup. I remember the PL1 as being one of the first to have nice wizards to assist "newbies" who just wanted a blurred background, etc. It seems like a camera your could grow and learn with. Start with the wizards; then as you learn, move to Tv, Av, M, etc..
and a built-in flash. :)

If the built-in flash is the same as the one on the E-PL2, it's hinged so it can be bounced which is a nice feature. Cameta, http://www.cameta.com/Olympus-PEN-E-PL1-Micro-4-3-Digital-Camera-14-42mm-Lens-Black-Black-Factory-Demo-52477.cfm has a refurbished E-PL1 with the 14-42mm lens for $189.95 and also features a one year warranty.

They also have the 40-150mm lens refurbished for $149.

I can't find any information on the EF adapter. Has anybody seen anything about whether it supports auto-focus and are EF-S lenses fully supported or are they partially crippled and manual?

I can't believe they didn't put an optional viewfinder and an articulating screen on this camera. Oh well, wait some more I guess.

Thanks!

Well, I just found an Asian site that says they reviewed it and it offers FULL functionality with EF-S lenses, a definite plus for the adapter.

I didn't really expect anything different but it's nice to know that it's this way.

Is there a Canon adapter? I only saw news of a 3rd party aftermarket one being made.

No OVF shouldn't come as a surprise. The last prosumer models to include them are the G series, and they're so small they're practically useless. I know some people like them, but compared to what a OVF "should" be, the ones that have been built-in haven't been of much use (IMO as always :)).

Thx. I'll have to look at that. Although adapters kinda defeat the purpose of slimming down the body by making it mirrorless. But I guess it's still a great option to have if you have a huge lens investment and want to use them with the new system.

the new Canon mirrorless looks interesting, I'll wait and see the reviews and hope the price comes down
