Canon Digital Rebel Camera - HELP (Zurg!?)

hi kids,

sorry I didn't see this earlier,

I love my digital eos. Everything I want in a camera.

I put a Tameron 28-300 on mine most of the time and it rocks - loads zoom, ok it is hard to hold still but it is cool

don't forget that your 28mm Tamron is not really 28mm when using digital camera. Due to the size of the sensor, you'll need to factor it by 1.6

Therefore you 28mm is actually 45mm if you're using a regular 35mm SLR.

It is up to you what size camera you want to carry around, choosing the right type of case helps as well. I used to have a big case for my camera then purchased one that comfortably fit (like a "V" shape), made quite a difference.

If you can afford it I would seriously consider a digital SLR. The point and shoot cameras are slow to focus, don't handle low light well and the images aren't as clean. The sensor size on a point and shoot is a tiny 8.8x6.6mm vs 24x16mm and up on SLR's. This is why a 6 megapixel image on a SLR is equal to or better than that of a 8 megapixel point and shoot.

As for the Canon Rebel...

It is a pretty good camera but the Nikon D70 really outperforms it. Every single review points out that the Nikon is a better camera. Canon's Rebel comes with a rather cheap lens, it is very slow to start up (the Nikon is ready instantly) and they cut quite a few corners in bringing this model in. The Nikon was a 2 year from scratch effort and the D70 is considered better than the D100 which is quite a bit more expensive. Just pick up the two cameras and you will notice the difference.

If you a Canon fan or have a lot of Canon lenses I recommend looking at the 20D, it gives the Nikon D70 a run for the money.

Montblanc,

just a bit of caution. If you have original regular Canon lenses, buying a 20D may pose a problem (when you enlarge the pic to 8x12). The regular Canon lenses are not hi-res enough for the 20D. (Although it's okay to use them for the 10D).

Now that Im contemplating in using 1DsmkII (16.7 MP), I think now I have to go with L-seires lenses or Sigma's equivalent.

We are taking our rebel to disney world tomorrow. If you email with your email I can tell you how we liked it. We will get back on the 29th. My husband loves this camera and wouldn't trade it for anything. He is very into photography. I have loved the difference this camera made.

Email me if you want to know how it went.

1DsmkII...

If I could afford it! Let me know if you buy it would love to hear from a user...

If I buy it at all, it won't be until January 2005 the earliest. Still gotta sell my Bronica med-format film camera to add to the funding. Plus sell all my lenses before I can 'convert' them into L-series lenses.

Are there any other camera that can compare to the Rebel as far as funtion, capabilities and price? Thanks.

It's not out yet but Olympus will release E-300 (8MP) supposedly at the same price as the Rebel and it includes Zuiko (read: high-res) interchangeable lens.

The Nikon D70 is just $100 more for the body and in all reviews is considered a better camera than the Rebel.
