Hi all! I know a few of you (Zurg!?!) have a Canon Digital Rebel camera. DH and I are considering one. What are your pros and cons? Is it too big to lug through life, esp. WDW? We have two kids (6 and 3) that we think are pretty cute and like to document their lives - what do you all think of this camera?

So I'll tell you our experience....
the DR is big and it's bigger than I want to lug on vacation. Just the size of the bag it would take to carry it was a big detraction. We wound up getting the Pro1 which is a higher megapixel (8) but smaller while still having an SLR look to it. It's packed with features and takes AMAZING pictures. It's much smaller than the DR. We are LOVING this camera and everything about it. It's so easy to use but so packed with features you could never get bored with it. We just got our 1gb card for it and were amazed that even at the largest picture size and fine setting we still get almost 500 pictures on a card, gotta love that! The 7x zoom is impressive and the flash is really good too. I can't see really ever needing more lens than what it comes standard with on a vacation. Sure I like to play around at home but on vacation I don't want to hassle with switching lenses. This lens is a great quality and range.
As you can see, I cannot say enough good things about this camera.
I got mine from a dealer on Ebay who was wonderful and paid about $300 less than retail. If you're interested, pm me and i will give you his info.
Have I mentioned the AMAZING photo quality? We've already done some 8x10's that are better than what we have gotten at Sears and Olan Mills. Love, love, love this camera!

Still a Canon and the best money I've ever spent this is my 4th digital camera and the first one I've been happy with. Good Luck, it's a hard decision and took us 6 months to make up our mind 
Rather than getting Pro 1 (Canon), might as well getting an Olympus C-8080. Same price, 8MP, better picture and faster startup time (0.9 sec vs 3 sec) than the Pro 1.
I'd buy the Olympus although I'm a Canon lover.

I own a Digital Rebel. Since it's purchase, my EOS 3 body has been collecting dust (needs to be sold on ebay). I went with the Digital Rebel because of all the high-end canon glass I have invested in over the last 8 years. Takes great pictures, and with a 50mm 1.8, is fairly light. That being said, it will not be making the trip to WDW with us in 6 days. We will be taking my DW's 5 mp compact, and my contax G2 35mm film camera. Size really matters when you are on most of the thrill rides. The digital rebel in NOT waterproff, there are no rubber O rings protecting it's precious innards from water. That being said, I love the camera, use it weekly, took several "once in a lifetime" shots on our last vacation at the shore. When I put on the vertical grip, flash, and a 28-70L lens, everybody gets out of the way for the "big camera". Anyways, if you have lots of glass to stick on it, go for it. Otherwise, I would listen to previous posters, and consider going with a newer 8mp model.

We recently bought a Digital Rebel and DH just loves it. Seriously, the man takes it everywhere and takes pictures of the most obscure stuff just so he can be taking pictures.
I mentioned to him I was a bit hesitant to take it on our trip in November not only because of size (we have a second HP digital camera that is tiny and takes great pictures) but also because if anything happened to the camera I would freak out. LOL!
He sees it being no problem at all to carry around and doesn't think it will be a hinderance at all. But again, this is the guy who pretty much takes it everywhere except the bathroom (I hope!)

I was so surprised to find my thread still active!! We went ahead and got the Digital Rebel and absolutely LOVE it! It will be going to WDW with us in a few weeks, but DH will be carrying it. We got it from blueswitchdigital.com and they were wonderful! The pictures fron this thing are AMAZING - not sure what the lens is though - it's a zoom from my old EOS rebel S II.
I *think* my current lens is the 17-35 mm. The numbers on the lens itself go from 35-105? YOu can tell DH is the "real" photographer in our house! He'd like to know if the lens you're selling is an IS lens? I think he's interested...
Canon used to sell 35mm-105mm lens for their lower-end equipment (and lower priced Rebel Digital package).
For the higher priced Digital Rebel Package, they bundled the 17-35 with the body.
I currently have the 22mm-55mm USM Canon lens (brand new, never used) and 80mm-200mm regular Canon lens.
I've never heard of "IS" term for Canon.

DH bought the 35-105 lens as an upgrade with the Rebel SII about 12 years ago. We bought the Digital Rebel without a lens. He was using the term IS as image stablizing. Not sure if your 80-100 lens has an image stablizing feature?

No, it doesn't have that. I used to own Canon lenses with image stabilizing capability, but I find (after blowing the picture up to 8"x10") they tend to be more blurry when the object is moving.

I have a Canon "IS" zoom lens ... think it's a 50-135mm ... paid nearly $500 for it b/c it had the IS feature ... then I read the directions ... you're suppose to turn the IS off if your subject is moving ...
HELLOOOO, I bought the IS lens for sports and with kids my subject is always moving ... probably should have returned the lens, but I kept it and have never turned the IS back on
