Canon 7D

I am in the same spot as the OP. I was waiting to see what the 60D would be and am frankly I hate what they did with it..plastic body, no thumb wheel...

Actually, I think the 60D does include the thumb wheel. Here's a preview photo from dpreview (link):

Oops! I didn't realize this photo would be so BIG! Sorry!

I stand corrected then. Wonder what pic I was looking at then because the photo I saw had directional buttons as opposed to the wheel

Just ordered my new Canon 5d Mark II. Now the fun begins when it shows up on Thursday. :cool1:

Congrats! Hope you have fun with your new cameara and congratulations on the nice bonus from work. Good timing!

thank you all for the kind words.

mom2rtk - Good thing my son loves to be photographed. :thumbsup2

I just upgraded to the Canon 7D from the Rebel xTi and have had only a few minutes to play with it. But I am already thoroughly impressed. A couple features that are blowing me away:

1. ISO to 6400. Wow. This will really help in low light situations.

2. Auto adjust of ISO. Truly amazing! you can set it to auto adjust your ISO the same as Shutter and Aperture. Wow.

3. Second wheel for adjusting Aperture. Now in full manual mode, one wheel for shutter, one for Aperture. Makes it so much easier and faster.

4. Three customizable Modes!!! Just like switching to full auto, full manual, or in between, you can pre-define 3 different custom settings and just switch to them instantly. What a life saver.

5. Video. Super cool!

The 7D is just such an amazing precision camera. I am in love already after only a few minutes. And I haven't even learned the insides and out yet.

For anyone thinking of upgrading, it is a ton of money, but so worth it!!! I can't wait to see it in action at Disney this Oct.

Need opinions please.

I have a Canon 7d and mainly used the 24-70 2.8L on my last trip and it worked great of course. I am thinking of renting the 5d Mark II and a couple different L lenses to get shots with the full frame sensor on next trip. My end result maybe getting poster size images made or just some rich 8x10s.

Should I even bother? Am I putting too much stock into the 5d abilities compared to the 7d? I know the low light will be a tad better, but will regular lit images be worth the renting hassle? :confused3

Thanks ahead of time.

I would think it comes down more to the differences between full frame and APS-C more than low light capabilities. Do you feel like you are missing something, especially at the wide end? Will the increased control of DOF be something you can take advantage of? And so on... I think only you can answer this. Just weigh the benefits of the full frame and if you really think you will take advantage of it.

If it were me I'd just save the rental money and go with the 7D, which out specs the 5DmkII in many areas. But that's me. Full frame used to be a big deal, but I'm just not feeling it anymore.

As far as poster sized prints... that is more in how you handle the file than anything else these days. I've gotten tack sharp 27x41 prints from images shot on my old Rebel XT with entry level glass... so a 7D with an L series lens should have no problems getting larger than that.

You might get some marginal benefit in really low light scenarios, but I would think that you'd probably get more out of putting the money into renting or buying a couple of lenses.

A 10-20mm range would be where my thoughts would go. My experience was generally that the parks were too busy to get much use from a long lens...

I would agree I would look at lenses. Of course if FF is something you 'need', go for it. Personally, on my next trip, my plan is to add a 30mm f1.4 for dark rides and a wide angle (10-20 or 12-24 for fireworks, etc.). On my last trip, I primarily used my 28-70mm f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 (when it was working, since repaired). The 70-200 worked well on the safari ride and for shows in front of the castle. I brought a 100-300 f4, but I found that at WDW it didn't work well for what I was trying to photograph. I love the lens but it was just too long for the application.

I would take the money I was going to use for renting lenses/ 5d and use it to buy a nice L lens. If that was not enough money, I would save up to get one. What L lenses are you thinking of renting?

Advantages to renting the 5DM2:

1) Almost 1 stop better noise/ISO performance
2) Higher resolution and better resolving power
3) Slightly better dynamic range, particularly at higher ISO
4) Wider field of view
5) Better viewfinder
6) About 1 stop shallower DOF

Advantages of using 7D
1) Lower cost
2) Narrower field of view
3) Better AF performance
4) About 1 stop deeper DOF
5) Higher frame rate
6) Just a smidge smaller body, but roughly the same weight
7) Pop-up flash, which can control off-camera flash
8) Can use EF-S lenses

If I had both and could only take one, I'd take the 5D unless I really needed the higher frame rate or needed to use EF-S lenses. If I only had the 7D, I don't think I'd rent the 5D unless I had some fast EF glass and really wanted dark ride shots.
