Canon 70-300mm IS vs. Sigma digital 70-300mm

Hmmm...I have my eye on a Canon XTi... I think the difference between the basic Canon and Sigma lens would be mostly cost. Now..Canon makes the "IS" lenses for the Rebel XTI which stands for image stabilization...this is what I want. It makes a BIG difference in the quality of your pics, especially when shooting with a zoom lens and at night / low F-stops / etc. It's like having a tripod built into the camera..put it that way. Of course these lenses are much more costly than your standard lenses...and the Sigmas are not IS lenses as far as I know.

just want to add something...the is isn't really quite comparable to a tripod, more a monopod..it gives you a few more stops..ie you would still need a tripod for fireworks etc...it doesn't help with subject movement either just camera movement and doesn't work for cars ( ie when you are in a moving vehicle)

i have the 28-135 IS ( canon) and i really like it as i have some slight tremors in my hands and have a hard time taking a clear pic when they are bad...hence it is really helpful for me...however you still have to learn basic technique as to stand, hold etc...in other words, it's not a miracle worker :teeth:

Jann, the new Canon IS system which is on the 70-300 has a "Mode 2" option, which stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject.
