Canon 500D (Rebel T1i, Kiss X3)

I think I would have to make it my life's mission to find the cover. It must be there somewhere, right? Can you run a string down from the balcony, or throw something else down, etc, to get an idea of where it might have landed? Maybe enlist a staff helper with a flashlight? pixiedust:

I looked at my Xsi and there is a tiny switch (about 1/8" x 1/16") toward the back of the camera that is depressed when the cover is closed. If you can snap the battery in and then tape a bent paperclip, piece of a q-tip stem, or ? so it depresses the switch you should be good to go.

Oh how horrible. I would go searching as well.

That really stinks. I would also go searching. Maybe a CM would be willing to help and lend a flash light as another poster mentioned. I'd be crying a river if I was in your situation. Good luck! pixiedust:

where did you buy it? did you get extended warranty? I ask because I had a Canon S3 and the door broke off (knocked off the end table) - I had extended warranty from Staples (where I bought it from) and although it was 1 year old (maybe 11 months?) - I took it back and they replaced it no questions asked - of course they no longer carried the S3 and I upgraded to the S5 and had to pay the difference and buy another extended warranty - but it was better than nothing!

I'm sorry this happened - how devastating!

Duck tape, aluminum foil, a paper clip, and a piece of folded up paper. Not having a Rebel around to look at, I'm not sure what I'd do with them, but those are the bits I'd use to fix it.

Personally, I thinking searching the bushes is a better plan.

Well believe it or not, after our day of touring, we were relaxing before dinner and we get a phone call from security. They FOUND it!!! I couldn't believe it! DH joked that the guy that brought it up to my room just about got himself kissed. :lovestruc I missed it at DL yesterday during our good day of touring but we'll be there again tomorrow for the Fourth and I'll make up for lost time.

I caught the Electrical Parade at DCA last night and got some good shots. Also resumed my balcony shooting (no accidents!) but that yielded some poor results. Need to know more about my camera.....

Glad you got the cover back. Do you like the T1i? I have the XT and was thinking about updating to the T1i. Would my current lenses fit the T1i?

Have a great time at DL tomorrow.

Kim

What relief, huh? Now its time to bring home some good shots for all of us on the boards!

So glad to have my toy! I now have 600+ shots in my "Disneyland" folder on my laptop!

Here's some good ones:

I found a sweet spot in Manual mode for nighttime pics. Very happy with this. It's unprocessed. I'll probably just clean up the noise a bit....

I play piano and needed a shot of him to compliment the one of the player outside of Casey's Corner at WDW. He posed wonderfully!

A picture from probably THE coolest thing we've done on this trip!!! Although DH would kill me if he knew I posted his pic on the website! We are terribly sunburned in this pic, too!

Great pics Denice! I just ordered the XSi and I think I am about to go out of my mind waiting for it to come in. Glad you were able to get back your battery cover!

Does anyone know of a way to find out the shutter actuations on the T1i? I tried photo mechanic and astrojargon, but neither worked. I just got the camera this past Tuesday and the camera started labeling the files in the 3600 range. The SD card I used was brand new. Every other digital camera I have had started at one, but those were P&Ss. I just want to make sure I didn't get a used camera when I paid for new, or a refurb. Thanks guys.

urgg took forever and now it's a double post

guessing they don't have the new model on yet...maybe go buy a cheap memory card ( you can always use more memory and it probably would be less than shipping the camera off somewhere),format it in the camera and see what it says ...if it registers the same as your other card I probably would call where you bought it and ask what's up. i think you can send it in to canon and they can tell but not sure how much they would charge you, probably the refurb price of $135+.

how was it packed? were the cables and manuals, software all still sealed? my battery for my rebel xt and 40d both had plastic( blue i think)around them. the cameras themselves had a papery plasticy bag around them i think. did you try checking if the serial number had been registered all ready? adorama told me by law even if they get some new from another seller( ie if someone goes out of business) they have to check them out and can only sell them legally as a re certified, not new...did you get it from a reputable source? but 3000+ accuations is a lot, i would think it would look somewhat used especially if it was a demo or something. if canon refurbishes they put them in a white box and there is a refurb sticker on the bottom of the camera, course it does peel off easily

Just guessing here...would Opanda IExif 2.3 software reading a jpeg from the camera work? I know that worked on my Nikon D200 and Canon 40D. The camera actuation count could be found in the exif data of the image.

Chuck

If I reformat the memory card how will that tell me the actuations? With my P&Ns (all were Sony) even if reformated the memory card (ie wiped it clean) the camera did restart at 1. I know one time I switched cards from one camera to another and that messed up the camera counting. It started going from where the other camera, an older one, left off counting.

Upgrading to SLR for our upcoming Disney trip! I am just wondering around what size memory card I will need to bring for this type of camera. I plan on taking close to 10,000 images.
Thanks!

That depends. I am assuming since it is new to you that you will use jpg not raw files. According to the specs of the camera that is a fine jpg image at a 5mb file. At 5mb a 2gb card will give you 800 images. At 10,000 images that is about 13 2gb cards.

As you get more experienced you will probably shoot in raw. According to Canon your camera will create a 20mb image. You do the math!

If you are not going to use fine or raw, then why did you buy a DSLR?

Thats a lot of pictures!

I have the Canon T1i and a 4gb card gives me a little less than 600 pictures at the highest jpg quality.

So to take 10,000 pictures you will need 17 4gb cards. If I were you I would opt for 16 gb cards. My 16gb card can take approximately 2,300 pictures, so it would be best for you to have four or five of those. But bare in mind...if the 16gb card happens to fail...you can lose 2,300 pictures...Losing a 4gb card, while saddening, is much less heart-wrenching.

:EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention, if you plan on taking any video, that will consume a lot more memory.
