Canon 400D (Rebel Xti, Kiss X)

It is all about averages. With your point and shoot the number of really good shots in realation to the total taken will be low. The problem is the point and shoot camera cannot improve much at all even if the photographer themselves improve.

With a DSLR your average of good shots will only grow as you learn the camera. When I bought my D70 several years back I was like a kid with training wheels on my bike. Now paired with lenses worth triple the cost of the D70 body and knowledge of tens of thousands of actuations(shots) in my bag I am alot more confident yet still so young in photography.

Buy the camera, LEARN to use it and it will reward you.

... and don't cheap-out on the lenses. Buy the best glass that you can afford, even if you have to stretch it a little bit. Great glass is what makes truly beautiful pictures possible, alongside everyhting else, of course.

anyone has any ideas what could be wrong with it? I have two batteries, both charged...I was taking pictures at my dd preschool event, and it worked fine. I put it away to participate in some songs and activities and when that was done, I got out my camera and turned it on, and it wouldn't power on. I switched out the batteries, and still wouldn't power on. I took out the CF card and re-insert it, and still wouldn't power on. Took out the CF card and turn it on..and didn't turn on as well. The camera is only a little over a year old, and of course, I do not have any kind of extended warranty on it... am I out of luck? UGH!

I see a new 40d in your future.

Ohh..this is so not what I want to hear! :(

Is it not worth getting a problem like that repaired? Do you guys normally get extended warranty with a DSLR? If my camera truly does need to be replaced, I am just so glad that I haven't bought any lenses for it.

You must be kidding. I can't wait for the day that my XT stops working so I can get a bigger better camera body and the 40d is it. This is your chance. Take it and run with it.

If you've bought any lenses for the XT/XTi, they will work with the 40d. Its just the Pro bodies that some of the XT lenses won't work with.

The manual says to check the battery door and the card door to make sure they are closed properly.

Other than that, I would think it would probably be fixable. If your looking to upgrade like mabas, it would be a good excuse, but if your not then I would send it in.

Woo hoo...it is fixed. I emailed Canon Support and got a response in 45 minutes! They said to use a pencil eraser to clean the battery contact, and if that doesn't work, it needs to be sent it for repair. I guess the battery contacts were dirty. While I would love a new camera, I would like to keep this one a little longer!

Thanks!!

Hi- I bought a cannon rebel xti it came with a lens. I am just coming up from a point and shoot and I am very much clueless...

I have been reading, but we needed a better camera. My question is about lenses. What would be the first purchase you would consider.

The main use is for pleasure and business....my husband is an attorney and we bought it yesterday mainly to use to take a pic of a site.

I am interested in possibly in one that will zoom. I got the basic hang of taking the pictures on the camera and I am reading up on it late night and today...I am sure it will take some getting used to, but I need to begin someplace. Also, what about a bag? What would you reccomend? I saw one a Target last night, it was $50, a cannon bag, but the others were really small...
Thanks

My first question to you would be "Why do you think you need another lens"? The answer to that question can help you figure out which one to get next. I assume your camera came with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. As you are using that lens, what do you want to do with it that you can't?

Do you wish it could go wider? Get the Canon 10-22
Do you wish it could go longer? Get the 70-300
Do you wish you could take better low light shots? Get the 50 /1.8
Do you want to look like a professional photographer and work on your biceps at the same time? Get the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L.

Knowing what types of shots you want to take and a rough idea of your budget will help us give you the best recommendations.

LOL all good advice. We need more info to work with. And budget too.

Yes that is the lens that I got with it, however, when I used it. We were taking pictures of a site that we were not supposed to have access to, so we were locked out, but needed a pic of equipment. It did not get as close as I would have liked, does that help?

Budget....well I would not like to spend that much. I realize that lenses are pricey, so what would be my best bet for someone who is jest getting into this and does not want to spend a ton a $$$ yet.

A nice good walk around lens is the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8; probably cost you around $330.

If you want something less expensive you can't go wrong with the Canon 50mm 1.8. It's sharp contrasty and cheap (under $100). You are limited by its 50 mm focal length but it's a great lens to learn on. Everyone should have one in their bag.

Lots of decent camera bags, made by canon, lowenpro, tamrac. Buy something witha little extra room for spare batteries, filters, cleaning stuff and memory cards.

Hope I'm not to late to comment. We have a Canon Rebel XTi, and used the kit lens for our trips in May 07 and Oct 07. Santa brought us a Canon 55-200mm zoom and in early January we purchased a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

I'm not sure how far away the equipment was you were wanting to take a picture of was, but we found the 55-200 was a good zoom, however without the IS (Image Stabilization), you need to hold the camera very still or use a tripod when zooming out to 200mm to get a clear picture. The 50mm f/1.8 lens is a relatively cheap wonderful little lens for low light - we used it quite a bit during our Jan 08 trip for night shots.

One of my very first lenses was the 50mm 1.8 and I love it to this day. It is a great lens to learn on but like a previous poster said you are really limited with the 50mm.

Yep .. you have to remember to "zoom with your feet" rather than the camera ... well maybe zoom isn't quite the right word :lmao:

for me it would be more like stroll, or maybe shuffle:lmao:
check out the canon 28-135 IS F3.5-5.6...it 's a decent range ( would be comparable to like almost 200 mm with your camera which should be a decent length) ( in the $400, sometimes you can find them used on ebay or keh.com) or a new one that i saw reviewed as decent( round $500) tamron 18-250 f3.5-5.6 don't think that one has image stabilization...

bags, i like tamron, if you go to circuit city they have crumpler bags that should be ok fit. i have a canon backpack that has held up well. if you go to a camera store they probably will have some better bags( lowepro, tamron)

I'm looking for a new/bigger memory card for my camera (Canon XTi). Is it worth the money for the SanDisk Extreme IV? Its 40Mb/s vs the III of 20Mb/s and the II 10Mb/s

Do I need the speed of 40Mb/s on the XTi or is that overkill? I do like to burst and take a lot of photos quicky...and I use JPEG/RAW.

Thanks

I personally usually buy the fastest card possible, even if my camera won't see the benefit, upload to pc time should be fatser, plus then if I decide to upgrade cameras, the card shouldn't limit my camera..
