I'm new to photography and just got a cannon sx10is and just wanted to see what pics everyone was able to get. Particularly intrested in night/spectro pics and what setting you used. Thanks for any info or pics you can share.

I ahve this camera. I have had it for a year now and love it. It has many settings and it took me a while to really get the hang of using the different settings.

I bought the same camera about a month ago for the 20x zoom. Was a little hesitant after another poster here said she didn't like it quite as much as her S3. I too have an S3.

Had the recent opportunity to use the camera on a day trip into the city. Its was partly cloudy out. I was surprised how dark the pictures came out on Auto compared to my 3-4 yrs experience with the S3.

Not to mention it was bigger to lug around for the day.

Ended up having to edit shadows in all pictures. I also forgot to check the file size before shooting. Those are some BIG file sizes. Pain to email & going to fill the harddrive faster. I'll probably lower the setting.

While I love the extra zoom for where I need it, I'm still learning my way around the camera and can't say I love the results yet.

I'm keeping my S3 afterall like others said I would want to.

I have this camera. I am loving it. On my Flickr page, you can find some examples of shots. The June, July and August 2009 sets (along the right-hand side of the page) are pics taken with this camera. There are some fireworks shots in there (just local fireworks, not Disney).

Most of my shots are using the automatic settings, or one of the scene settings. Here's one example of a night-time shot with zoom.

Thanks a lot. I was worried that I was going to need to use manual settings for the night shots, which I'm not that good with yet. It looks like you pics came out very good with the auto setting. You got some good pics in there.

I'm the poster Silent1CB mentions as not being very happy with the SX10. While I'm thrilled with the SX10 (and that incredible zoom) in daylight and at night when you know you'll need a tripod (like for fireworks), for those in-between starting-to-get-dark and/or cloudy days, the SX10 just doesn't take pictures as well as my S3. Like Silent said - they're too dark.

We have another marching band competition coming up Saturday night, and I won't be taking my SX10 - I'll be taking my trusty S3. I'll give up the zoom in favor of know I'll get some decent shots.

And thanks, Silent, for reminding me that I need to adjust my file size - those 10mp files sure do take up a lot of room, and they take longer to write to the memory card, unless you buy the faster cards (which I've done). I've seen cameras out there with 12 and even 15mp - wow! And somebody on this board (I think Groucho???) posted about a year ago this real neat graph/chart showing how you really don't need all those mps anyway, unless you want to enlarge a photo to billboard size.
