Canned chicken?

Is there any good canned chicken on the market? I will usually pick up a rotisserie and take all the meat off of it and use it in multiple different dishes (enchiladas, soups, casseroles, etc) I found a recipe for a creamy chicken noodle soup in the crockpot and it says to use either cooked chicken or canned chicken. I've never used it and wonder how it would be in a soup or casserole?

Do you mean whole canned chicken? Ugh. I saw one on a show once and it looked so gross. Maybe it tastes fine but I'd never be able to get past the way it looks.

I like Kirkland premium chunk chicken breast packed in water from Costco. I use it to make chicken salad sandwiches...I add a bunch of ingredient and it's yummy. I did try it in a dish that called for canned chicken and it was very salty and wouldn't make it again. It completely changed the flavor of the chicken and I didn't like the flavor.

I strongly prefer regular cooked chicken for things like that, but the Kirkland canned chicken isn't bad. It's very soft, similar to tuna. It doesn't have bones or anything--it's just tender meat. It's a little too tender, though, like canned cat food (but without the smell).

We have extensive food allergies, and I keep it on hand for disaster prep since nuts and seeds are out for us, and we need a protein source. I also take it with us on trips sometimes because we don't eat in restaurants much and sometimes need a way to have protein I don't have cook. It's definitely tolerable, just not my first choice.

I just saw a canned chicken on an episode of Cuthroat Kitchen. All of the cooks looked pretty grossed out by it. The celebrity judge didn't know it was canned because it was a blind tasting. She just didn't like it and the contestant chef lost the challenge. I would just buy a rotisserie chicken from the market.

I was going to say Kirkland as well. Canned chicken sort of wigs me out, but there is one recipe I love that requires it, and Kirkland is the only one I've used that is always perfect (others have funny tastes or little bones...gross).

Ok maybe I'll just stick with my go-to rotisserie chicken. And just to clarify, I was not referring to a canned whole chicken. I was talking about the canned chicken that's next to the canned tuna.

Ok good. Canned chicken just makes me think of that thing sliding out of the can. Its like the image was burned into my brain. I think I've been traumatized by it.

I tried Swanson's and Trader Joe's canned chicken and both of them were nasty. WAY, WAY, WAY too salty and weird tasting. Trader Joe's makes one in a broth and without a broth. The broth is mostly salt water, I guess. And the one without salt had other weird tastes in it. Neither really tasted like "chicken." You have to wonder what the heck do they have to do to it to just put in a can, that it no longer tastes like chicken?

Walmart brand is pretty tasty.
I have never seen the whole canned chicken anywhere here, but I haven't bought a fresh whole chicken in 30 years (not counting the whole ones they sell cooked and ready to eat at the grocery store). We only cook with skinless boneless portions.

Canned chicken is never going to be as good. It's just handy to have around in case of a snow storm or natural disaster. You can make chicken salad sandwiches and if you put enough mayo and onions in there it's edible. My heavens that whole chicken looks nasty. Not sure if I could eat that even in a zombie apocalypse.

Costco sells 3 pounds of rotisserie chicken breast in a package. It's just large chunks of meat done perfectly. So yum. I buy this, make it into 4 or 5 freezer packages and then grab one as needed for chicken pot pie, chicken alfredo or soup.

It is super yummy. Exactly like the rotisserie chickens they sell at Costco, except all the work has been done for you.

I was just saying this the other day....."wouldn't it be great if the stores sell cut up rotisserie chickens?". LOL

Unfortunately, the closest Costco to us is 41 miles away. I've actually never been to one but might have to take a trip one day to check things out. I'm assuming it's like a BJ's or Sam's Club? Can you just go in and shop or do you need to get a membership or even a day pass?

Our Kroger now sells roasted chicken already cut off the bone. Its about the same price as a broasted chicken.

Canned chicken isn't that bad. I have gotten it before over the years and its just about like canned tuna. Its nice to have when you are snowed in or you need something quick. I have used it over the years to make buffalo chicken dip.
