I have a mouth full of canker sores right now (mine are triggered by stress) that are just killing me.

I have tried Zilactin, Orabase, Campho Phenique, Orajel Canker Sore discs and still can't get any real relief. I even have one on the tip of my tongue that is very painful.

Anyone else get these? Any cures that seem to actually work for more than a few seconds of numbing the pain?

I wish that I could help you. My DD gets these and they get so bad. It doesn't seem like a good remedy for them exists.

The thing that she does use routinely (so I guess that it helps SOME) is Kanka. Not the one with the brush in the bottle. I have heard that it hurts like heck, but does provide some relief.

Your dentist can treat them with a soft tissue laser, and there is also some prescription medication that can be applied in the dental office.

There is also a prescription version of Orabase with kenalog.

Are you taking vitamins? Sometimes these seem to flair up with stress when you are deficient in something.

Rinse well with mouthwash or warm salt water at least twice a day.

Oh god ... I could write a book about canker sores....

I have had hundreds (thousands?) of the little buggers.

There was a phase for about a year and a half where I had two or three at a time, all the time. It was so bad that I was pretty convinced, in the context of a couple of other things, that I had a disorder called Crohn's Disease that causes bowel problems, but often also causes canker sores (since the tissue in our mouths and on our tongues is the same as that throughout our intestinal tract). I had a GI doctor that was also suspicious enough to do a ton of tests (ouch :scared1: ) to figure out what was going on. There was also suspicion of Celiac Disease, which can also cause mouth sores

What happened is that everything came back clear. And it was a total puzzle until I started getting effectively treated for my sleep apnea and anemia and they almost completely went away.

Turns out they flare up when the immune system goes to pot because of any number of chronic conditions. Anemia also specifically disrupts the membrane on the tongue.

Bottom line -- make sure there isn't something else going on that could be dampening your immune system. And make sure you are not anemic due to iron deficiency, because that is often a culprit.

Outside of immune system stuff, there are some things I came across while doing a ton of research about canker sores when I was so miserable because of them. A lot of people have them triggered through citrus foods; also, there is a substance in most toothpastes that can be very bad for some people (I think it's called sodium lauryl sulfate) because it is slightly abrasive (like citrus fruits, it disrupts the membrane on the tongue)

A lot of people also put baking soda, salt, hydrogen peroxide, or alum on their tongues and claim it gives some relief. All of them work by leaching moisture out of the sore and (maybe) helping it heal faster. I never found that those things worked much, but you could try them.

Good luck!

Did I say I could write a book ... :lmao:

DH swears by Cepacol. Its a mouthwash. I had a nasty canker sore a couple of weeks ago, finally caved and went and bought the Cepacol and sure enough the canker sore went away!

My daughter gets them now and then and I take her right to her dentist and he lasers them and then she is fine! It is not covered by our insurance but it only costs about 50.00 to have them done each time- well worth it!

I had them for years and then I switched to Arm & Hammer Baking soda toothpaste. It balances the PH in your mouth and really prevents canker sores. My father suffered from them his entire life until I told him to change toothpastes, he never had another one ....

I like Arm & Hammer original as it had the highest concentration of baking soda. I can no longer get it but I find the age defying to be effective. If I bite my cheek I will immediately brush my teeth to balance my mouth so it can heal.

Women can have problems based on their hormone cycle as mouth tissues swell and are more easily bitten so the best thing is preventive, keep the PH in your mouth balanced. When I try other toothpastes, I always end up going back to Arm & Hammer so I really need a maximum alkaline paste.

No, I do not take any vitamins but I do have some Centrum here so I can start taking those.

I have never heard of a laser treatment - do most dental offices have this?

I have been anemic in the past but haven't had my levels checked in over a year. I didn't realize there was a correlation.

I had heard the toothpaste connection before but never have switched toothpastes - I'll try anything at this point.

Thanks for the brand name to get. DH has used that brand in the past and liked it.

I woke this morning with yet another new canker sore on my gum back where my wisdom tooth used to be. Ugh.

My oldest son used to get them a lot until he started doing what I read about on the DIS...brushing with the Arm & Hammer toothpaste and taking a daily l-lysine tablet. Now he rarely gets them. Best DIS advice we've gotten! :)

I'll add the Lysine to my shopping list too. Thanks!

I used to have them constantly, 2 or 3 large ones triggered by anything salty or acidic. I started taking L-lysine supplements and now I very rarely get them.

My dear friend, (she has now passed), used to get terrible sores when she was going through chemo. She swore by Cepacol. Put some on a cotton swap and leave it on the sore for a few seconds. Hurts like heck, but if you do it a few times a day it works.

I also find that if I use those paste-like remedies, they are most effective when I clean the sore with the Cepacol and then apply the paste right before bed. It seems to stay in place better.

Canker sores are the pits. My sister and I both get them and our neither of our parents ever had even one!! If I have a cold and post-nasal drip, I even get them on my tonsils sometimes! OUCH!!!

I will send positive thoughts your way! Canker sores are no joke!

My DS14 used to get them terribly. At ne time we counted 10 active in his mouth.

He has permanently switched to Sensodyne toothpaste - I believe it is the original, because it has no SLS in it (Sodium Laurel Sulfate?). He also has to be very careful drinking citrus juices. He seems to be able to eat the citrus fruits, but the juice is too acidic for him.

There was also a Dr. who told us to mix benadryl and Maalox and swish it around your mouth. DS did that once, but the flavor almost made him sick.

As agonizing as it sounds, scrub the hell out of it with a toothbrush. Make it bleed, then dip a cotton ball in Listerine and hold it on the sore until you can't stand it anymore.

I used to get them all the time. They're the worst.

I tried some Colgate Peroxide Rinse, that worked pretty well.

When I get them, I rinse with Peroxide 3 times a day and this seems to help them heal pretty quickly for me.

I agree with the L-Lysine tablet. One of the girls at my doctors office told me about this. I only take it now when I feel one coming on. I then take 3 and again the next day. I was also told about a L-Lysine lip balm sold at the Whole foods Market. I use this every day for cold sores. Dson also gets the stress ulcers and the dentist told me to use peroxidle mouth rinse. It works great and doesn't cause any pain. It can be used after each time you brush your teeth as a preventive. It is expensive so if you only want to use it once a day brush your teeth before going to bed and then rinse with the peroxidle. We were unable to use zilactin or similar as it make the stress ulcers worse. Susan
