Candy Stripers

The hospitals around here have many volunteer positions. It's been many years since I've seen a pink & white seersucker dress though.

I've been a nurse working in the hospital setting for the last 16 years. The last time I saw a "Candy Striper" was probably about ten years ago. We have Junior Volunteers, male and female, who do assorted jobs throughout the hospital now. I don't see any assisting in patient care though, possibly due to legal considerations. They mostly work in Medical Records, food services, and transport taking patients to Same Day Surgery when they arrive in the morning via wheelchair or just accompanying the ambulatory patients. They also help out on the various units with paperwork and things of that nature.

I recently saw a couple of girls with a cart of flowers at the hospital (about 2 weeks ago). I don't know if they were in the pink & white pinafores, but it looked like something similar. I meant to ask if they were candy stripers, but I was distracted.

We have Junior Volunteers. Around here, they can't really have much direct patient contact, mostly just free errand runners. I was a Candy Striper and loved it. I'm a nurse now and it really helped me decide what direction I wanted to take.

opps I thought I saw a double P

never mind

I was a hospital volunteer in high school, didn't wear a pink dress though. I did everything from greet people in the lobby and give directions, patient transport and my favorite-helped in the newborn nursery bringing babies to moms, holding the babies when they cried, etc. That was a great "job". That hospital still utilizes volunteers of all ages.

We do here- dd has been one for the past 3 summers. The girls wear red and white striped pinafores and the boys wear red and white striped shirts. The Student Volunteer Managers (which Megan was this year) wear blue and white striped shirts.

I used to be a candy-striper when I was young. The whole red and white striped dress and all!! :cool1:
I would work a long shift on saturdays and my dad would call me an "all day sucker!" :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao:

I loved that "job"!

They are Junior Volunteers or Youth Volunteers now.

My DD was a Youth Volunteer this past summer. No pink and white uniform, though. She had a blue polo shirt with the words "Youth Volunteer" on the front.

By the way, I still have MY Candy Striper pinafore in my closet in my parents' house . . . I LOVED that dress!

My daughter has been a youth volunteer for the past few years and loves it. She pretty much delivers flowers, transports patients, delivers newspapers, and her personal favorite, bringing specimens to the pathology lab.

By the way, it looks great on a college application. :)

i was one about......8 years ago. they don't call them candy stripers tho anymore, they just call them "volunteers".

When I was looking to do it in the summer of '98, they were still called Candy Striper, and we were required to wear the aprons.
I'd shop around, if you or a kid are thinking of doing it. I opted not to do it because of the attitude of the person at our local hospital (she talked down to me, referred to the Candy stripers as if they were burdens due to their age), but my friend did it at the other local hospital and had a great time-made friends, was really useful, didn't have to wear stripes.

I've always been puzzled by the name/job description...
