Cancun 2006?

I don't know about the room types, but I don't think the view would make or break your vacation. The resorts are beautiful.

We did get a 2BR for 160 pts, though. Don't know if you could hold out for that.

Okay, so MS called today with a match......a 1 BR at the Royal Carribean July 1-8, 2006. It is 160 pts. They can not give me a unit number, that makes me nervous. Considering the time we're looking at, unit size, and points.....not knowing the specifics of the location......is this still a good trade?

Help. I think I need a push. If nothing else, to ease my mind.

TIA,
Micaela
I was surprised it's 160 points, that is not high season for Cancun. But I went back and checked my list and it's the only MX or Caribbean destination that is high for any of the summer. Some are mid and others low for that time. It is VERY hot there that time of year. I'd really only worry about the specific unit for the Mayan. I suspect they could tell you the unit if they truly wanted to but it may be that their agreement with II prevents or discourages it. I know I've been able to find out previously on SOME of the fixed weeks/units I've exchanged to but not all.

You can't really hold out for a 2 BR unless you're willing to do the higher points. It's just luck of the draw and if you turn this one down, I suspect they will take the RC off your list and possibly Cancun in general. And though it doesn't appear they do so at this time, the way I've read the wording would suggest the exchange fee could be non refundable in this situation.

If you're set on this and the 1 BR will work for you, I'd take it. One other thing you might try is ask them to see if there is a 2 BR sitting there to get for the 160 points, if it's just sitting in II, no reason you shouldn't be able to get it.

Okay, so I've done it! I confirmed the room, even though I was hoping for less points or more accommodations (to make up the difference in points). My DH didn't really think we needed to mess with the whole rent out thing (even though I found a 2 BR villa (beachfront) for 1500). Oh well, such is life!

So now my next question is......how do you recommend we get to the RSands from the airport? MS mentioned Thomas More Travel transfers, but was hoping to get some 'first hand experience' advise. BTW....it will only be me and DH, for our 10th Anniversary. This will be our first experience outside the US, aside from cruising. So, any advise you could offer would be great.

We used Thomas Moore in 2000. They have some type of direct affiliation with the Royals. There is a round trip choice which saves a couple of bucks. All of the above options are fine IMO.

Yes, Thomas Moore is affiliated with the Royals and the cheapest form of transportation from the airport. But you have to wait until a van/bus is full and then you stop at all the Royal Resorts to unload passengers. The advantage with Cancun Valet or Brandts is you get a private van for up to a family or group of 10 and you go directly to your resort.

They also book all the same tours as Thomas Moore but again you can choose private or group tours, with private being the least restrictive.

Not sure of correct spelling, however, we stayed at the Iberostar Parisio-Delmar in Riveria Maya. Not sure if is a valid trade, however, would highly suggest it. We had my 7 year old son with us and he was able to stay busy the entire time. They have an incredible pool with a lazy river, ceramics, kids activities, scuba diving, beach etc.

We used Thomas Moore for our transfer this past April. We did a private, round trip transfer through them (booked through the internet) and it went very well.

Cancun Valet and Brandt's is $65 round trip compared to ~$125 round trip with Thomas Moore.

Our round trip, private transfer through Thomas Moore wasn't $125.00, it was $90.00. We booked it through the royal resort website.

In 2000 I think the non private amount was $12 pp one way or $18-20 pp round trip. I actually preferred seeing a little of the other resorts locations en route.

We decided not to use our pts and rent as the one bedroom, last June 2004, as it was $1100 with tax. We did sell some pts to help pay for it. Suprisingly the only one we could get a one bedroom in was the Mayan out of the 4 resorts Royal has. It was great but the other Royals were full. We got the room at 6 weeks out. We were surprised it was full, hardly saw many people though except for Royal Sands, but I guess it is peak vacation time for Mexico.

Okay, now that we have confirmed our 1BR at the RCaribbean....I will keep these websites handy (www.cancunvalet.com and http://www.entertainment-plus.net/index.cfm), so far the second one seems to have better prices, but I will have to dig deeper to see the difference.

Are there any other websites or books that you would recommend to a fellow DVCer venturing out to Cancun for the first time? I'm already planning on freshening up on a little Spanish, even though I am of Mexican decent, I know very little.

BTW...it will be myself(27) and DH(32).

TIA
Micaela

Brandt's has a card where you can get 2 for 1 dining and the like. TUG has a lot of info as well.
