Hi! I was active here a couple of years ago when I was losing weight and getting back into running. I did great, then a year later I was diagnosed with lung cancer.

I finished chemo & radiation in October. I am slowly getting my energy back - the doctor's say it could be a couple of years before I am "back".... But, I need to do something. My goal now is a 5K.

Has anyone else battled back from an illness and done well? I have gained a lot of weight due to inactivity. I am having problems with nerve damage and pain. I think running/walking will help with that.

Any suggestions from anyone? I know I have to start slowly, but.......

Thanks~

You may not realize that you are an inspiration to so many of us. I read your post and immediately thought that your road to be cancer free was a marathon in itself. This should make any 5k a breeze in comparison to what you have already gone through. I am so glad you are well enough to take on this.challenge and I wish you all the best!

You are truly an inspiration.

You take one step at a time. Do what you can. Figure where you are pace-wise. You do not have to run, you can walk many events. Check the pacing requirements and make that your goal. Set small goals and see what happens, like light pole to light pole, a few driveway lengths...

My DH has many medical issues including hip replacements, quad bipass, no colon...
He started out walking short distances and over time has built up to be able to walk a half marathon with a 4 hr time limit which is an 18 minute mile. He started out with a pace of about 26 minute miles and has recently shaved down over time to just under a 17 minute pace. His comment recently was that he would never have thought he could do this and that over time, this walking thing has become easier.

DH went past the 5k distance since the pacing requirements are too fast for him for the events around here. He started with a half of a half event then kept moving from there. There are some events that you can look into as you build distance with even more of a time limit if you pick an event that goes along the course while a marathon is being held. Some halfs I did followed along the same route as a full and allowed the entire time of the full to complete the half. You can let the race director know your intention.

I love that you are interested and hope you can get some steps in.

I complain when I get a cramp, and I have finished a marathon. You are alot tougher than I am. You will be back, and able to do whatever you set your mind to.

Be patient, as it sounds like you are. I have not battled back from illness like that personally, but I have run in races where there were cancer survivors. Like I said, you will be back.

Really hats off to you and to your positive thinking, you are a motivation for all of us who are here.
