So, what happens when you book your cruise and pay it off and then two weeks before you end up cancelling?

I am pretty sure you do not get a refund :( If you have insured it then that is a different story.

Does the insurance refund all your money? Has anyone had experience with getting your money back?

Will depend on why your cancelling & who you insured it with. This does not sound good

travel insurance will refund what DCL does not refund, under certain conditions. For example, they won't refund simply because you changed your mind. If there's a medical reason, you probably would need some kind of documentation from the doctor.

I guess I am still undecided about cruising. We would love to go, but I'm the worrier and I am so afraid one of my kids will get sick with the flu or something.

My daughter is never sick and when we went to WDW for her birthday last year, she got an infection in her lungs and a bad cold - her only major illness the entire year! She was a trooper and we kept her on meds most of the time, but it could have been far worse. And we didn't pay for that entire trip in advance!!

I've been reading some threads about people who are sick not being allowed to cruise and it got me worrying. That's my job, I'm the mom!

If you cancel two weeks before your sailing date, you will lose 50% of the cost of the cruise. If you wait until one week before, you will lose 100% of the cost of the cruise.

If you have travel insurance, and your policy covers the medical condition or other good reason because of which you are cancelling, the insurance will reimburse you for your loss.

If you just cancel because you are "still undecided," you are likely to lose thousands of dollars, even if you have travel insurance.

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS
Cancellations must be made by telephone or in writing. Changes to the vacation commencement date or changes of Guest names will be considered cancellations.

If the cancellation request is received 60 or more days prior to the vacation commencement date, 100% of the amount of the vacation price paid will be refunded. Cancellation requests received less than 60 days prior to the vacation commencement date will be assessed cancellation fees as follows, regardless of resale of stateroom or hotel room:

59-30 days prior to vacation commencement date, applicable deposit amount per Guest

29-8 days prior to vacation commencement date, 50% of vacation price per Guest

7 days or less prior to vacation commencement, no refund

Please don't cancel just because of what MIGHT happen. Last year we cruised on Carnival and I was very worried about SARS. I went to my family doctor and expressed my concerns to him. He gave me a prescription for antibiotics, neausea, diarhea (SP?) to fill and take with us just in case. We didn't need it and had sure a wonderful time! I would hate to know you missed such a fun and memorable vacation because of "what if"! You could get sick just staying at home! This is a trip your child(ren) will remember FOREVER!

Well stated mommaluvsDis!
Just to add my 2 cents worth: I have been a peds. R.N. for almost 20 years and the same precautions apply today as woah, those many years ago. Wash your hands after touching toys, hand railings, etc., don't touch your face before washing hands, if your sick, STAY IN YOUR ROOM. Very simple, very effective. If it would make you feel any better, ask your pediatrician for a script for an antibiotic, fill it and bring it with you.
BTW, the policy in the club and the lab is to have every child wash hands upon entering and before each meal, in addition to after using the B.R.

As I'm rereading my posts, I may have been a bit unclear. We have not booked a cruise yet. I want to, but my concern is that I will book it, pay for it and then 2 days before we are to leave, my kid(s) will get sick or someone will break their leg or some such thing. It sounds like you all are saying that trip insurance covers those kinds of instances. I'm guessing it depends on the kind of insurance you have. Do most of them really cover you if your kid ends up sick with the flu? Does it depend if you cancel it or if DCL tells you that you can't board the ship?

Thanks for all the thoughts. Everyone has good points. I'm just trying to get a clearer picture of how you get your money back if you would have to cancel.

The specific policy was good and I hadn't seen that before. My husband is in the National Guard and of course, who knows about where he might be a year from now! That might put us in the cancelling 60+ days out category too.

check out the different insurance sites. They will tell you the coverages. access america, travelguard, travelex, global care are just some. Your TA can suggest more or try a search on Google or the like. Some even offer coverage for if you just change your mind, of course you pay more for that. they will go over all the coverages and limitations for you and you can decide. I wouldn't not book a trip because someone might break a leg. I would suggest book it, plan it, obsess about it here and then have a great time. Just my thoughts.

The insurance will cover you provided you get the coverage you are looking for. Good luck.

Cameo,
My DH is in the AF, and up till a week before our cruise there was the possibility he would deploy. Disney has a separate refund policy involving military deployments and refunds. I would say book it, get insurance and hope he doesn't deploy. Mine didn't but it was a tense few weeks before the trip.

Also, none of us got sick, the even have sanitary wipes outside the dining rooms for the last minute clean up. And the kids are constantly washing their hands in the clubs. None of mine even got the sniffles.

Does this mean that if you're within the 59-30 day range and have already paid in full that the refund would be %100?(I hope) I'm asking because it looks as if DS just got a new job working at the corrections facility!:)

No, the refund is only 100% outside of the 60 range. After that point you would have paid in full and you will lose money.

I think this policy is extremely fair. Up until the 60 day point we have nothing to lose!

The wording is a bit unclear, but if you read the cancellation policy that Horace posted closely, you will see that if you cancel in the 59-30 day range, you lose your deposit amount ($200-$250 per person depending on the cruise)

Off the topic -- how did you get that picture of the Magic in the Panama Canal. What a great symbol of fun to come!
