We may have to cancel our trip. The emergency came up at 29 days, but we're still unsure. Is there any advantage to cancelling at 29 days versus 10 days? I mean, I know about the holding within 30 days, so we're already there (I called MS yesterday to verify, hoping we were miscounting). We're just wondering. If there's really no advantage, we can just play it by ear at this point, and see as time gets closer whether or not we need to cancel. But if there's a real advantage, we have to drag out the crystal ball NOW and decide what to do, based on how we expect things to go.

no advantage, you cancel at 29 or 10 they still go into holding. If you wait till day of to cancel you lose them completely.

31 or More Days Before Check-In All Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be returned to your account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

30 Days to One Day Before Check-In All Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be placed in a Holding Account in the Use Year in which the reservation falls.

On the Check-In date All Vacation Points used to make the reservation will be forfeited.

Give MS a call and explain your situation, often they will help you work something out.

You can call member services and hope for an exception but if they can’t or won’t make one the only advantage to cancelling earlier would be if you wanted to rebook in the next 60 days. We had to cancel a trip last month (for a similar type issue) and talked to a couple people at member services but the most the could do to help us was offer to reallocate some of the points in sept (when we were within 60 days of a nov reservation). No one time exception was granted regarding releasing the points back to the current use year or anything and we were advised to hold onto the reservation if we weren’t sure even up to the day before if we weren’t sure if we could go. We would up canceling about 5 days in advance (after attempting to rent the confirmed reservation) so we could use the holding points to book a May stay. We can’t travel this summer to Disney and the likelihood of being able to book much at 60 days or less for the fall seemed extremely unlikely. Good luck OP hope you can get an exception we couldn’t. We had hoped for an exception b/c we had a high demand room for a high demand week but no luck.

As mentioned it doesn't make any difference, 29 or 10 days, other than noted. Just wanted to send some pixie dust that things work out. pixiedust:

I'd just wait it out if you don't know. As you've learned it doesn't matter at what point you cancel since you're already in the holding window.
