Cancelling trip?

We have a trip booked over thanksgiving. Our UY is December. If some reason we have to cancel we lose those points right?

It depends on the original UY of the points. If you banked them from Dec18 to Dec19, then you'll need to use (or lose) them by 11/30/19. If the points you used are in UY Dec19, and you cancel more than 30 days before the trip, you should be able to bank them into UY Dec20. I'd have to look up what happens if the points are UY Dec19 but you cancel within 30 days - I think it goes into a special bank account - not sure when you'd have to use them by.

Sorry - a correction. If they are banked points, you have until 11/30/20. UY vs Cal Year gets confusing. My mistake.

We have a Dec use year. This year we are planning a trip in early Nov and plan to buy trip insurance. The way booking is looking, there is no way, we would be able to cancel (say due to the flu) and rebook two weeks later.

Sorry - you are absolutely correct - 6-month booking window. November would be too late. Thanks for clarifying for the OP

Assuming you mean this Thanksgiving, if your points are 2019 points, and you cancel before your banking deadline (July 31), you can bank them.
If they are points that were banked into your 2019 UY (2018 points) of borrowed from your 2020 uy into 2019, then they do expire on 11/30, so cancelling gives you until them to use them or rent them.
So the answer depends on what UY points they are, and when you cancel.
If you cancel Aug 1 or later, then yes, you have until 11/30 to use them or lose them, regarless of the points original UY.

My guess is you would be able to rent that out successfully should that happen.

One of the drawbacks of traveling late in your UY is being stuck with losing points if you have to cancel after your banking window, or are already using banked or borrowed points,

So. As mentioned, if you cancel before July 31st, you can still bank any 2018 points you used.

No matter what, any banked 2018 UY points or borrowed 2020 UY points will expire November 30th, 2020.
