Cancelling Reservation Question

First time cancelling.Trip was planned for September 2020. My use month is August. I used 176 points from August 2020 and 71 from August 2021. If I cancel, I will have to use all those points by August 2021, I will not lose any points, is this correct.

Under usual rules, the Aug 2020 points go back into your account and can be used by July 2021 or can be banked into the Aug 2021 use year and then used by July 2022. The borrowed points would remain in the Aug 2020 use year and must be used by July 2021. Thus, no complete loss of points.

However, DVC might return those borrowed Aug 2021 points to their original use year, Aug 2021, under current "temporary" procedures being followed, adopted as part of the coronavirus response. And if it does so, you might not see that return to the 2021 use year until a week or two after you cancel. I say "might" return to your 2021 use year because it is not clear that the existing return rule would actually apply to points borrowed from Aug 2021. That kind of unclarity exists in a number of the special rules adopted for coronavirus.
