cancelling reservation last minute

All these scenarios pop in my head and I wonder how to handle them.

Lets say we have an early morning reservation for breakfast and wake up not feeling well - if we login and cancel prior to the reservation, would we be charged? I know it says you must cancel 24 hours in advance, but what happens if you do it an hour prior instead?

I am not planning to do this, obviously, just thinking out loud..

You would be charged. In the rare instance this has happened to us, the MDE app lets you modify a reservation up until an hour or two before (but not cancel). So you could change your reservation for some random day/time in the future and save it. Then go back in and cancel it, and you won't be charged.

This has happened to me. We called and there were no issues. This also happened at DLR on our last trip: we had a parade dining package booked, but my daughter was feeling not great and wanted to go back to the hotel for a rest. I just walked up to the podium on our way out of the park, told them we would have to cancel because she was sick, and they were very understanding.

I think in your case this is because you were able to physically be there. That's considered 'showing up'

It may be problematic because the restaurants obtain the reservations when they open, and they may not get your cancellation. I know this because I have made breakfast reservations at 7AM for a 9 or 930 reservation and the restautabt didn't have my reservation YMMV.

At some point Disney is going to decide the "oh I am sick" excuse is being abused (see changes to other programs for examples). And when they do they will take away the CM ability to make the exceptions. Sad but true. It will penalize those who are truly sick but..... I know of several people who routinely use that to cancel late.

Can't you still change the reservation to a later date in MDE and then cancel it with no penalty?

Just my 2 cents, we've cancelled day of reservations on the phone due to someone's illness without an issue. I hope people are not abusing this because ours was genuine and I would have hated to think there was no flexibility in case of emergencies.

As an aside, I still long for the days when it was possible to get same day "good" reservations! I remember going to kiosks in Epcot to pick a place to eat dinner that night!

Thanks for the replies! Unfortunately, I have stomach issues and its always a possibility.. Just wanted to be prepared.

Sort of OT. Did they change it to 24 hours ahead? It used to be before midnight the night before.

You can also call and they will not charge you.

Yes, this was my experience as well. 2 trips ago I had to call and cancel and they were very understanding, I was not charged a cancellation fee. I feel that with so many walk-ins, they know that they will find someone in a second to take the table that I cancelled.

I have had to cancel reservations within an hour, called and was never charged. We cancelled CRT within 30 minutes and they didn't charge us. Sometimes stuff happens.
Went on another trip. Didn't feel like we missed much to begin with however.
