So I was supposed to leave this Thursday for a trip to WDW. That trip is now off, and I have my unrefundable airline tickets staring at me. We are actually moving the trip to next May, and have found dates and times that will work. Can someone please walk me thru the process of cancelling the current tickets, and using them as a credit towards the trip for next year? I have never had to do this before, and would like to know what to expect. Thanks!

The tickets we are going to use the credit for are on Air Tran, if that makes a difference. We also have tickets on Delta that we are not going to use, so I'm guessing I just call and cancel those too? We won't have any money left on those, the change fee will eat up everything.:headache:

You might want to call Airtran and Delta, since they are really the ones to walk you though it, but I can say this: you will pay Airtran a change fee of $75 per ticket to re-book them. If you have A+ rewards they may put the credit (minus the change fee) on your account until you use it to re-book within a year. Not sure about Delta, but it's probably similar. Were you flying two separate airlines for this trip?

Delta is going to charge you $150 per ticket change fee. This is one of the disadvantages of booking 2 airlines, if you cancel a trip you get hit with fees twice instead of once.

Your new flight date must be within in a year from when you purchased the ticket.

I had to cancel a leg of a flight home to go see a sick child. Delta was very accommodating. The CSR that I spoke to put a great note on my cancellation, issued a credit for future travel and booked my flights to see my son using Skymiles (cheaper than paying the current going rate since this was a same day change). I just used my credit this past weekend but couldn't book online, I had to call to get to a special department who could waive the change fee since the change fee was more than the credit!

When I read all the horrible stories about "heartless" airlines, I am very confused. My dealings with Delta (the easiest to use in my location) have been favorable and fair:confused3 I mean, they ARE a business:confused3.

I think I'd advise the OP to contact the airlines and tell them why the trip has to be rescheduled. If it's a good enough reason, perhaps she'll get some early pixie dust.

I agree ... contact the airlines ... both of them. We just changed our reservations for Thanksgiving week and the airline (American) waived our fees. Yes, they are a business. It may take a manager to make it happen, but we got some early pixie dust! :cheer2:
