Cancelling American Airlines for April?

Has anyone cancelled a flight on American yet? It talks about no fees if you change the flight, but then if you call or look at the website it says if you are traveling before May 1st, you can CANCEL online. Are they going to charge me a fee if I just do it online? I tried calling, but they said there was a high call volume and it hung up on me. Just curious if anyone has experience.

I did a change and got an automatic refund of the difference, which was nice. But I’d love to know about canceling too!

I wanted to just do a change, but I bought these tickets when they first went on sale because they were at a great price, and now it will only let me reschedule before June 3rd. We were going over spring break and can't pull the kids out. I just want to reschedule for October. It's such a mess and I realize it's not the airlines fault either...

We have an international trip booked for June and they changed the domestic leg of it and it does not work for us. I would love to just cancel and get a refund. That way we can take our time deciding when to go. Anyone have any insight? I am afraid to hit the cancel button.

Honestly, I think I would cancel now and get my refund then rebook with Southwest while prices are low because you can change your plans easily with no fees.

I was brave and hit cancel. It then sent me an email with a link to request a refund, but none of this Corona stuff was an option for requesting one. . So I wrote why I was cancelling, saved our ticket numbers and confirmation code and am hoping they will contact me to reschedule or that I can eventually get through to them on the phone.
