I may have to cancel our trip we have planned for Dec, and wanted to make sure how far in advance I should cancel w/o worrying about using our points in January. We have a UY of Dec, and I was using my banked points from my Dec 09 banked points if that makes a difference.

Thanks in Advance,

Tony

Your points are good for stays between December 1, 2010 and November 30, 2011. You can cancel up to 31 days prior to your reservation date with no penalties. The points will be retuned to your account.

If you cancel 30 days to 1 day prior to your reservation date, your points will go into holding. You can still use them but with some restrictions. You have plenty of time to cancel so I won't go into details.

If you cancel your trip at least 31 days in advance the points just go back in to your account with the same classification as they are now.

So, with your Dec UY, those banked 2009 points would still have to be used by November 30th, 2011. Dec 2010 UY points would still be Dec 2010 UY points and you would have no restrictions on them.

If you used any borrowed points from 2011 UY, then those would have to also be used by November 30th, 2011 as borrowing is also a final transaction.

It is only when you cancel with less then 31 days that points go in to holding where there are restrictions.

Good luck!

If you cancel within 30 days and your points go into holding, that doesn't mean you have to use them in January or within 60 days.

It means you can only use them for reservations 60 days or less from arrival. But they would still be available to you until Nov 30,2011.

If I use Oct '10 points for a June '11 ressie and cancel prior to 31 days out, I can still bank my '10 points into '11 if I do so by May 31st, right?
Thanks,
Tina

Yes, you can.

If DVC turns their room inventory over to CRO at 60 days, what happens when a member tries to book a reservation less then 60 days? Where do they get the inventory from?

That's the BIG question! I've' always wondered that too.:confused3

Member Services can still access those rooms.

I don't know. I've always assumed that MS entered your info into their computer, magic occurs, and you get the reservation.

However, <60 day reservations do happen all the time. Both of my adult daughters have booked numerous stays (including New Years Eve at SSR with a very short waitlist) <60 days.

If they haven't booked them all for cash guests. :sad2:

Correct. At 60 days or less, it's up for grabs. Members do get the income from the cash rooms back as a dues credit (breakage income). I once got a BCV room a week ahead on points.

Income from rooms that are given to CRO 60 days out is credited back to member dues as Breakage income. It reduces the total annual dues paid by members.

Pretty hard to claim that DVC members have been somehow disadvantaged when they've had 9 months to book the room and have chosen not to do so. Better to earn SOMETHING from the room rather than let it sit empty.

Geez, Bill. If you're gonna gripe and complain about every single aspect of DVC, then at least pick things that don't have an obvious benefit to DVC members.

Disney must keep most of the income from the rooms as an administrative fee. If they didn't it wouldn't be worth their time.

Anyone know how much they keep and how much goes towards dues?

Information about breakage income is available at dvcnews.com (see http://www.dvcnews.com/index.php/dvc-program/financial/2010-resort-budgets). It is the 6th line item from the bottom on the chart.

If it wasn't for breakage income, BWV's MFs would be about $5.47/point rather than $5.36/point. I've always found it interesting that BWV has the highest relative amount of breakage income of the seven WDW resorts.

Thanks for the link.

Reviewing the information can sure make your head spin and ask even more questions. Do the numbers seem out of whack due to the total points sold at each resort?

Why are the maintenance costs higher at BLT then they are at SSR?

I suspect there are so many variables that come into play -- size of resort, number of points, economies of scale, etc -- its difficult to figure out why one resort's line item expenses are higher or lower than another resort. Take breakage income. BWV gets $0.1131 per point credit due to breakage income, while SSR gets only $0.0878 per point credit. Does BWV get more income because it has more empty rooms at the 60 day mark than SSR? Or is it because BWV charges a much higher rack rate for its breakage rooms than SSR? Or is it because BWV's breakage is spread over a much smaller point base compared to SSR's point base?

If we had access to all the financial information on each resort, we'd probably find there are multiple factors coming into play.

One interesting item about the Resort budgets: Did you notice that VGC's resort budget includes a line item for a Transient Occupancy Tax of $0.3529 per point? Its the only DVC resort that has that tax built into its MF. Guests staying at Aulani will have to pay a Transient Accommodation Tax, but that tax will be collected directly from the guests and is not built into Aulani's MF.
