Cancelling a reservation booked with borrowed points

I hope I can explain my question..... :) I plan to book an upcoming split stay so I will have 2 booking windows. I have enough points for the first part, but I would need to borrow a few points (24) for the second part. The second part of the split stay is somewhat in question, meaning we may have to cancel it later. I'm trying to avoid cancelling the booking that has borrowed points as I don't think we will be able to use them before the end of our use year. If I had to cancel the booking with borrowed points, would MS "switch" the borrowed points to the reservation that I am keeping? I seem to recall them doing that in the past for me. Alternatively, I can book the second part of the split stay first then try to book the first part (that we will definitely keep) with the borrowed points but it would be a few days past my 7 month mark, so I risk losing availability.

Are your points all from the same membership and contract? If yes, after you cancel the reservation you made with the borrowed points, you should be able to use the modify feature to modify the reservation you are keeping. You would keep the same dates and everything else the same. The system will then pick up the 24 borrowed points and leave you with 24 current use year points. Those could be banked if you are still within your banking window.

This depends on how many contracts you have. If you're using one contract for one and one for another, they can't see each other.

You can call MS to make sure the borrowed points are being used in the first reservation. It might require changing what contract it is pulling from.

Thanks for the help. I do have 2 contracts (same resort, same use year) but both reservations would be on points from the same contract and the borrowed points could also be from that contract. It sounds like I should be able to modify later to preferentially use the borrowed points in the event I need to cancel part of the split stay. I'll just go ahead and borrow points for the second half of the stay and not worry about it unless I actually need to cancel.

Since you have one membership, it won’t be an issue The system just doesn’t do it automatically.

The only thing to be aware of is to cancel at least 31 days or more in advance or any swapped out points end up in holding.

Similar question (maybe): I borrowed 2023 points to make multiple room rez for an extended family vacation, and now one party has flaked out so I canceled that rez. When my 2022 UY starts am I going to be able to bank those points back into 2023?

Banking and borrowing are final transactions and cannot be undone (under normal circumstances). Those points cannot be moved a second time.

No but you can bank 2022 points into 2023. You'd basically keep the borrowed points to cover the res that are you now using and then bank the 2022 points into 2023 that are being freed up.

Those points are stuck in your 2022 UY. However, you can modify the reservation you still have, don’t change anything and it will pull me n the borrowed points into that one, which would free up 2022 UY points which you would be able to bank.

Just make sure do you the adjustments at least 31 days before the check in..now if you can..so you don’t end up with holding points as any changes to a trip within 31 days causes that.
