We had to cancel our cruise this weekend due to my son getting the flu. We bought insurance through DCL. I’m in the process of getting all the paperwork together but I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on how long and stressful the process is and how long until you received your money back. Thank you! This is the first time I ever had to file a claim so I’m just curious to see what I’m in for

No experience with DCL insurance, but did you go to the doctor with him and do you have a statement he was unfit to travel? My guess is that is needed
Yes he was diagnosed with the flu. Just dropped off papers at pediatrician

We had to cancel my mom and brother from our family cruise last summer, due to illness. While we did not use DCL insurance (used Travelguard), we found that once the doctor fills out the form stating that you are unable to travel, then things usually arent too often disputed and are expedited within a few weeks. I think it took about 3 weeks total, but it probably varies from situation to situation, depending on the reason for cancelling, and what verification/approval is needed. Given the current issues that the flu is presenting right now across our country, I would be shocked if any cruiseline, especially DCL, would give you any trouble about an insurance claim. Sorry you had to miss your cruise...hope your son gets better soon.

No experience with DCL insurance, but we also used Travelguard. The process was quite reasonable and easy and I was quite pleased with Travelguard. A few years ago, we had a trip to Tampa booked with our older DS. We purchased a Travelguard policy that you could cancel for a work reason(if one person in the traveling party had to cancel, all the traveling companions could cancel) with documentation from the employer. Low and behold unfortunately, he had to work on a last minute project, he was young and just beginning his career. Travelguard lived up to their promises. Now Travelguard is my "go to" travel insurance company for non DVC trips. We do purchase the DVC insurance for our DVC trips. I find the DVC insurance annually to be quite reasonable. You never know when sickness strikes:sick: or trip interruption is necessary!
Sorry that you had to cancel. Flu is so rampant, it is very scary. Hope that you can rebook and enjoy!:goodvibes

I had to cancel a cruise several years ago due to a medical incident that occurred a month after final payment (2 months before the cruise). I filed a claim through insurance booked through Disney Cruise. I called the insurance company to get the paperwork needed, which is probably what you just got: a statement from my doctor showing that she recommended that I not travel and showing that the first diagnosis for my condition came after I had purchased the insurance.

I also had to show that I had paid for the cruise and indicate any refund I had already received. Because I cancelled a few months in advance, I did receive a refund directly from Disney Cruise for a portion of the fare. The insurance then paid the rest of the fare for me and the other 3 members of my family. I don't remember exactly how long it took for the payment, but I think it was less than a month after I sent all of the paperwork.

You should have no trouble, given that this is clearly an unforeseen condition. I hope your son recovers quickly and you're able to reschedule for another trip soon.

No experience with this, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am. I cannot image how disappointing this must feel. Hoping your son is feeling much better now. Also hoping you can reschedule for another sailing not too far in the future.

I’ve never used dcl insurance, but I just wanted to say, thank you for keeping your son home while he is sick. A lot of parents would have tried to fake it to get him on the ship, therefore risking other children’s health. I appreciate your altruism from one parent to another. I pray your son heals quickly and it doesn’t get any worse than it currently is.

Thank you everyone, it was a hard decision to make but I would not feel comfortable traveling with him sick and then not knowing if anyone else in our house would get it or attempt to board a cruise with the illness. Thankfully, knock on wood, no one else has it and my son is doing better. We are rescheduling once we settle up with the insurance. Of course there's that fear that the claim will be denied but I doubt it because he did have a positive flu test.

As a grandmother who is sailing this weekend with our two grandsons I also sincerely thank you and wish your son a speedy recovery. I also wish you a very magical make up cruise when you rebook. This current flu outbreak is very disconcerting.

DCL insurance is really pretty good. My mother in law had to cancel a trip due to work issues and DCL was great about it. They issued her a credit in the full amount she paid good for a future cruise with no expiration date. This was back in 2012, but they were very easy to work with and gave her no problems whatsoever.

Hope the rest of your family stays well!

Recently cancelled cruise with DCL insurance due to injury and got refunds for 2 people (separate checks) in about 3 weeks with just submitting doctors note and proof of booking.

This makes me happy hearing this. I have my eye on a May sailing that works for our work/school schedule so hopefully we have the same experience of 3-4 weeks! Hopefully I get the call tomorrow that the doctor form is ready!

So sorry to hear that your son is sick, hope he feels better soon and no one else in your family gets ill. We always cruise during flu season, so far we've never gotten sick, but I'm always a nervous wreck that someone will and we'll have to cancel. Hope everything works out with the insurance and you will all be cruising soon.

We also thank you and am sorry you can't cruise this weekend. We board the Wonder on this Sunday and I have never been a worrier about the flu but this year all I can concentrate on is hoping none of use get sick. My future son-in-law went to the hospital with the flu and they told him he had it but they would not test him as the hospital said they were running low on test strips and are saving them for the elderly and children.

Hope you have a great make up cruise once your son is better.
