Canceling a reservation

I currently have a reservation which I booked with a combination of current use year points and a few points borrowed from next year. I would like to cancel and rebook, however my new reservation would require less points. What happens to my remaining points? I know they would be put back into this use year. Is there any way to bank my extra points to next year or should I just stick with what I have?

Make sure that your new reservation uses the borrowed points from the canceled reservation first. Then any remaining points will be current use year points that can be banked (assuming you are still within your 4 month banking window).

Thanks that's what I was hoping for. Can this be done online or is my best bet to call MS and have them handle it?

I'd suggest calling MS. They can make sure the borrowed points are used first.

You could also try banking the returned points and then making the new reservation (the online system will not allow you to bank borrowed points), but make certain you save the number of points you'll need for the new reservation.

The online booking system lists the borrowed points that have to be used first so it's pretty hard to make a mistake. If you feel better about have MS make the reservation for you then give them a call but check to make sure that they used the correct points.

Your banking window is 8 months long from your UY start date.

Thanks everyone. I was able to cancel and bank my extra points from this year and use my borrowed points to grab the reservation I had been waiting for using the points I had borrowed. I did it myself online. It was easy. I banked first then I used my borrowed points to book so I was sure that the correct points would be used.
