What should I look for in a policy when buying insurance for a cruise? And do you have a recommendation on where to buy it?

We are covered medically through work... do I need more? Trip cancellation etc. seems to be very expensive!!

Thanks for any tips! :thumbsup2

Can you just stop into your local CAA office and ask for an estimate? I do get travel insurance when I travel outside the province, even for my day trips to Buffalo, better safe than sorry. Hope that helps!
Have a wonderful cruise!

We always decline the travel insurance and hope for the best.....A travel agent can give you a booklet on what it covers and what it doesn't.

We do have medical though someone else. Would never travel with out that.

I think they can take the medical out of the price, then it would be cancellation insurance but there are rules there too, and lost luggage. :confused3

I've looked into our work coverage, and we have medical and lost baggage, but no trip cancellation. I think I'll look into some cancellation policies, but they all seem to have so many loopholes, I'm not sure the cancellation part is worth the cost!

I have cruised 9x and have always taken insurance out. I have taken it out with RBC. I have taken full medical coverage and/or non medical. Sometimes the price difference between the two is only a few dollars to have full coverage (encase my work medical coverage doesn't cover it). Never know if you have a medical situation that you have to be air lifted off the ship (that only is about $15,000 or more), I have seen it done.

One cruise planned, my DH was layed off before the cruise and since I had coverage with RBC I was fully reimbursed.

Two years ago, we had planned on staying in Ft Lauderdale 1 day after cruise. When the ship docked in Ft Lauderdale we found out my mother was on her deathbed and we had to return early. All our expensives were reimbursed.

You NEVER know when something might go wrong,- missed plane, lost luggage, people have missed the ship while they visit a port, and covered after final payment to cruiseline. I have heard how people don't take out insurance (nothing is going to go wrong, we are healthy or too expensive and I will take my chance) and had to cancel at the last minute and want the cruiseline to reimburse them, which they DON'T. That is why you have insurance, it is peace of mind.

We are going to Disney World this summer, I am trying out President Choice's insurance.

I agree with all your points! I'm not a client of RBC, but I know you can still buy their insurance through travel agents. I may price it out.

Does PC insurance cover trip cancellation? I thought it was purely medical.

My mother was booked to go on a Hawaiian Cruise last March, she had purchased her insurance through Presidents Choice, as she found them to be reasonably priced.
She ended up getting sick, and we had to cancel the trip for her. Dealing with PC during the claims process was excellent, and it didn't take long to get a refund.

I always get the travel medical insurance - you never know what could happen. I would hate to have a vacation ruined because of a sprained ankle and a $15,000 medical bill on top of that.

We have through our visa card & AMA membership travel cancellation and lost baggage so we only ever have to buy that extra. It's just not worth the risk for us....US medical care is SO expensive and $50/trip for that added protection is well worth it for us, even if we don't use it!

I have bought through AMA and through CIBC for insurance. They all pretty much offer the same thing, but I have found over and over that the cost through CIBC is always significantly lower (don't know if it's because I continually get through them or because my bank account is through them :confused3 ).

President Choice has both comprehensive and trip cancellation insurance. For our trip, there was a difference of $8.64 each between the two coverage so I took the compreshensive to cover everything.

You can do RBC through the internet, phone, or travel agent you don't have to be a RBC customer.

The only online link for RBC I could find needed you to be a client, but I will look again.

Thanks for the info!

You should make sure that your medical insurance will cover you when you travel outside of Canada. Alot of insurers or the GHIP don't cover you once you've left your home country, or in your case, sometimes even once you've left your home province.
I get coverage for medical and trip cancellation. I use Travel Guard, and they have Travel Guard Canada, with plans specifically for cruises.

I work for a bank, and travel quite often. I have full coverage through work, but only up to a certain point. Personally, I'd rather spend 40-60$ 'extra' before a trip, and have it 'wasted' by not needing it, then NOT spend it, end up needing extra coverage for some emergency and not having it, and being out anywhere from 500-1 million + (Don't laugh, we had a family friend who didn't take medical insurance, had a heart attack in the US, and had a bill of over 1 million dollars...he was in the hospital for several months!).

I have used Insurance for a cruise, but usuallly decline other trip insurance.

I figure even with a flight arrangements, if you get sick and miss 1 day or so at either end you can usually make some other arangements BUT with a cruise if you miss the boat when...you have missed to Boat.:rotfl:

I used RBC 2x and had a claim once and they were great. I do work for another part of that company so it might not be an objective opinion.
