Canadian documentation question..

Hey TIA, We are taking our first cruise and I was online DU today making a payment and was reading up on some info and I came across this.

For all non-U.S. citizens including Canadian citizens, travel documents will be taken upon check-in by a Disney Cruise Line® representative, and a passport/Alien Resident Card receipt will be issued for presentation to immigration inspectors upon return to Port Canaveral.

This may seem like a stupid question, I am aware that we need passports to travel, but do they actually physically take the passport and keep it until we return? what is the receipt? Sorry again if this seems like a dumb question, maybe the wording is confusing me today, didn't sleep much too riled up from the Jets/Sharks game.

I am a German citizen and have cruised on DCL 5 times since 2013, the last time in December 2016. This has never happened to me. I show my passport at check in. Then I get it back. It goes into the safe. At the end of the cruise, I take with me and show it to the immigration officer.

I am not sure where you found that informations, but it seems to be some outdated procedure.

The only issue I had once was that on the Panama Canal cruise they wanted to see my ESTA confirmation. Which is crazy, because the ESTA website states clearly that there is no reason to print out anything. I was lucky that I had a print out mainly for my own reassurance.

I'm a us citizen, and did the wonder to Alaska last July. Our passports were checked and then given back. I can't recall if they were checked again when we got back to Vancouver. There are certain excursions where you might need them, so I'm sure what you read was just a misprint. ☺

I am Canadian. On our last two cruises (2015) we've had our passeports with us at all times. We left it in the safe during most of the cruise except for our excursions because you need an ID to leave the cruiseship and get back in. No receipt.

I'm Canadian. Not sure why this still shows on their website however years ago they did take Canadian passports and kept them till the end of the trip. We had to gather in the Walt theater on the last morning and present the card given us at which time passports were returned. I never liked that system.
They have not done this in about 5/6 years, not sure of the exact time period but don't worry, you will get to keep your passports.

Canadian as well. We have taken 6 cruises out of Port Canaveral and they have never taken our passports. We get them back and we put them in the safe.

Yeah they used to keep them now they just look at them when you check in and give them back.

We keep our in our safe in the room. It is a good idea to have a photo copy of your passport in case you lose it so you have the number handy to get a new one issued.

I remember having to get up early on St Thomas days to got to the lounge early because we were Canadian's to retrive them because we were going back into the U.S. and had to do immigration but they don't do that anymore either.

Canadian here! We've never had ours taken either, so I think that's outdated information you are finding! Only time we had passports taken on a cruise was on RCCL out of Dubai last January. They were returned to us two nights before the end of the cruise.

Another Canadian here: Nope they don't take them. We cruised out of PC on the Jan 14-21 2017 Fantasy cruise last week, they looked at our passports when we checked in and then handed them back to us. I would NOT be comfortable handing over my passport for a weeks' vacation only to receive a receipt as proof that they have it.

Not any more. They used to do this. We had to hand in our passports and they were held on the cruises we did between 2000 and 2005. You had to go down in the morning (really early morning) to one of the lounges or theatre and collect them from immigration officials. We were quite surprised in 2008 when they didn't take them.

We have to hand them in for a day or so on one of our Med cruises because of some regulation about cruising from Greece to Turkey and then back to Greece. I hoped to get a stamp but apparently they only do a random check so no luck.

When travelling with relatives from different countries... My Canadian friends got to keep their passports. My Hong Kong friends got their seized at the terminal in 2014. When I heard what happened, I said they were going to need it to ride the White Pass railway into Fraser. The documents were released after a chat with Guest Services.

I was not there for the conversations... but did wonder what was going on.
