Just saw on a quick news preview that passangers are stranded, and airline goes under!! :scared1:

Looks like the airline was called ZOOM....(not sure...)

Anyone know any more?
How awful!

Yikes! I was just saying to my husband the other day when we saw a Zoom billboard how I never fly with relatively unknown carriers just for that reason.

Do you know who they are owned by? Usually the smaller companies are owned by a larger airline....

That's too bad. Unfortunately it's nothing new.

I knew a fellow years ago who flew for Braniff in the US. He was 2 hours out of LAX heading for Hawaii when he got the message to return to base as the company had ceased operations.

He kept going figuring that the passengers needed their holiday and they couldn't fire him!

Hope it works out OK for the stranded passengers.

Really a shame...we are off to Italy next month thank god with AC but another couple joining us were flying in with Zoom and another friend was flying to France and home from London with them in Sept as well. Lots of scrambling going on now..

DARN! We were hoping on using ZOOM Airlines to fly our family to Europe next summer for a friend's wedding. My husband works for West Jet... so now our only hope is that WJA will announce a flight to London Heathrow. Fingers crossed! (The SWA agreement was a fantastic one, and will help TONS for flights down south... great for Canadian travellers for sure)

We flew Zoom to Wales last summer and were going to book a flight for next spring as soon as we got back form Disney. Guess we'll be looking elsewhere now for cheap flights to Europe. I did wonder how they could only charge $189 for trans-atlantic flights.

Off topic, but I've found Icelandic Air (or whatever they're called) have good rates to many European destinations. Either a layover in their capital city (I won't try to spell it) or a free stop over up to 7 days.

In the travel industry, there have been red flags around this airline for months now.

It just goes to show that cheapest isn't always best, and if there is a low price that seems to be too good to be true, it probably is........

Icelandair is one of the original low-cost airlines, dating back to the 50's, and the first to offer long-haul transatlantic services. I've personally flown them from Orlando to Barcelona, and aside from being the cheapest option there, they were IMO also the best one as far as my schedule was concerned.

And the capital of Iceland is Reykjavik :) Pronounced Rake (as in a garden rake) - yah (as in saying 'yeah' quickly) - vick (as in Victor)

Hi - I'm from Scotland and the failure of Zoom has hit the headlines here big time as well.

Zoom is owned by Scottish brothers who originally owned a highly successful travel operator called Direct Holidays which they sold to Airtours for a reported £84 million.

National press here in Scotland are reporting that the company is blaming "rocketing oil prices for its demise." :sad2: The newspapers here are also stating that 700 jobs have been lost between the UK and Canada. :scared:

My niece from England just spent the summer here with us. We just saw her off on a Zoom flight to Cardiff (they live close to the Welsh border) on Tuesday night!!!!! Thank goodness she made it home safe and sound.

My son's friends just flew out on Wed. from Calgary to Scotland. They were the last flight out on Zoom Airlines. It is lucky for them but I feel so bad for all those travelers who are stranded. :sad1:
