Kevin and John....oh my.....just listened to the Canada Cruise review and alternated between laughing out loud and wanting to weep. It was one of those segments that found me yelling at my mp3 player and that doesn't happen often.

I think you guys might have fallen victim to what happens to a lot of American tourists in my opinion and actually did what you see people who just show up to the Disney parks not knowing what to expect; you didn't quite know where you were going, research wise...understandable, given that this was on the tail end of a marathon travel for you.

Canada, and in this case, Halifax, are not quite exotic enough locations for anyone coming out of the US to think that they might need to do a bit of research and thus sometimes miss out on some of the best aspects. I once had a headache inducing conversation with a couple from New Hampshire that were put out that they could not view the ocean as they drove down through to Yarmouth because on the map it looked like you could....the fact that they were driving through the Annapolis VALLEY, meaning big hill between you and water, never occurred to them.

Couple things first, geographically speaking - Halifax and St. John (not St. John's - Dustin was kind of right, St John's with an "s" on the end is in Newfoundland but that was 500 miles and another province away, you weren't even close to it). Halifax is indeed in Nova Scotia but St. John is in New Brunswick on the other side of the Bay of Fundy. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are two separate provinces, much like states. Also, it wasn't a river!! It's a harbour, part of the ocean, but it does get narrow where the bridge goes over it so I can see how you might think of it as a river.

Second, Halifax isn't really that big of a city so unless you need transportation to go to some place, like Peggy's Cove, and you only have a few hours, you are better off to just hope in a cab and go to a spot or two. There's all kinds of history as this is one of the oldest cities in North America but you kind of need the back story to appreciate it. Which is why I'd like to find that driver and ring his neck.

You guys should have called me! Here's what I would have done....first we'd have gone to the Maritime Museum of History where you would have gotten a really good over view of the Halifax Explosion, why we're so proud of it and why it's such a big part of our history and our present....just ask the folks in Boston...we give them a honking huge Christmas tree every year as a thank you for helping us out during that time. Also you'd have seen a great display on the Titanic at the museum as well. Then I'd take you over to the Historic Properties where there were all kinds of neat little shops, with maybe a stop at the Brewery market, where if there was anyone in your party that wanted to go on a beer tasting we could do that....we're all about our Alexander Keith's here :)

Should you be done shopping a little early and want to see some sights we'd drive up along the Grand Parade, to the top of Citadel Hill (our big fort), through the South End, along the NorthWest Arm (stop and look at the big old anchor that got blasted there by our explosion :) no droppy cannons on that side), out to the Dingle (tower there has a stone in it from every country in the Commonwealth I believe...those are the countries the Queen owns ;) ...including one from Shakespeare's home), then to Point Pleasant park and back to the Port.

I guess my point there is you're right...never get into a strangers car and be taken to a second location!

You're right, The Seaport Market where the Farmers Market is held, is a disappointment through the week. It's been an ongoing issue since they opened it. Saturday's are great at the Market because that's when farmers can get there, the locals shop and the money is made. In this case I think it's a matter of bad timing for Disney to not have the ship in port on a weekend.

I'd be interested to know what, if any shore excursions Disney was actually offering? I'm thinking that they are still feeling out this Canada cruise thing and after listening to the segment I'm wondering if it's a good fit.

By the way, it's not the pier itself that is the wonder, it's "Pier 21" itself and what it represents for the country in terms of immigration. As someone said, it's our Ellis Island. Terrific museum in there are well.

Bad luck on your meals too! Lobster one of those things they ding you as tourists on, just ask Kathy how much she paid for hers. There are tons of restaurants in the harbour front area that wouldn't charge you a fraction of what you paid for that soup...again it seems it was the luck of the draw.

So please, please, please guys, don't judge Halifax and Nova Scotia based on your one day experience in it. The conclusion I've come to listening to the segment is that cruising is a nice way to travel but maybe not a good way to visit.

Come on up sometime when you've got more then a few hours to spend and I'll show you MY Nova Scotia.....

The price I paid for my lobster was priceless. :) Much cheaper than here in FL. It was much better than getting it in a restaurant.

I totally agree Dawn.
Glad that most people that have done this cruise do not agree. I was wondering if they really got off of the ship.

But we saw where the hookers, pimps and drug dealers live.

We saw the droopy cannon.

We saw a pretty park with a hotel across from it where "brides and graduates get photos taken".

We went to see a big black anchor near a park....but it was too foggy....so we saw a duck.

We bought tea and lavender spray in Pier 21.

We walked the "Boardwalk" near the piers.

Trust me. We got off the ship. The weather was rainy and dreary.

And in all of your visits to Disney World.....how many times have you been to downtown Orlando or any of the museums?:rolleyes1

All of that is why yo need a do-over!!! ;)

And I'm curious as to where the droopy canon is. I've never seen that one....

Again, I'd be curious as to what other things Disney offered you because if it was only the Taste of Nova Scotia stuff then they've failed....they put out a bunch of videos showing things like Peggy's Cove and the Bay of Fundy but really, since fog is more common then sun here they should have planned accordingly for that and given you good options.

We were on the cruise and booked the "Lighthouse and Lobster" shore excursion through Disney. Ponchos were provided on the ship for those who did not have rain gear.

It was a nice trip, we learned about the lobster industry as we went out in a lobster/tour boat and pulled some lobster traps up. Now I can actually tell a left handed male lobster from a right handed female.

Saw two out of three light houses (too foggy to see the third - is that ironic?)

Heard about the Halifax explosion history and saw a lot of the old defense positions on the shore line, along with some beautiful homes.

Ended with a fresh lobster lunch as part of the tour and a long walk back to the ship in the rain.

Had it not been so miserable, we would have walked more of the town.

Believe me I have been on the end of Harlem Heights and know which chain is known by the locals as "Club Meth".

A little research and a softer approach may have helped jmo.

Not sure what Harlem Heights or Club Meth are and I'm not sure what you felt needed a softer approach.

But we saw where the hookers, pimps and drug dealers live.

Oh, you got the DELUXE tour then!

Seriously though, I'm sorry you had such a miserable time. I often do the tourist thing in my own home town and I'm very proud of Halifax and Nova Scotia.

I will take this in the same vein as your dining reviews, that your comments reflect your personal experience at that one moment in time. It's too bad, though. There is so much history and geography and culture and food and music within walking distance of the pier, much of it inexpensive or free, that with the right information you could have had a very different experience.

I agree with Dawn, you need a redo, but since Disney won't be cruising this way next year it seems unlikely.

Regardless, label me a proud Haligonian! :thumbsup2

I was so excited to listen to John & Kevin's segment...I got up early to download it so I could listen on my way to work...sigh...I feel bad that you both got such a bad deal with your "tour guide" (I put that in quotes because he was obviously not qualified to drive let alone give a tour).

If only you had a tour guide like hockeymomNS or Applemomma...they would have shown you some great sights and shopping...

Susan - realizing now why the British have a strict training process for anyone claiming to be a tour guide!!!

Folks.....we didnt hate Halifax.

We had bad weather...rain, drizzle, fog.

We had a WEIRD tour guide.

And we were part of a food tour that didnt excite us...especially in the rain.

And you are absolutely correct. This was based on one visit of about 4 hours.

Please dont take any of this personally.

Halifax looked very much like Albany, NY. I spent 35 years there and moved away.

It was just a silly review......not a diatribe against Canada or Canadians.

Hey I didn't realize they had lovely views like that on the tour?:lmao: At least they don't throw their beer cans on the lawn.

Ah well. I lived in Orlando for a brief period of time and I never saw the museums either. Although I have been downtown.

I have been trying to get my family to the Orange County History Center but it fails whenever we discuss issues like Epcot.

I fly to Orlando to go to theme parks.

When I go to Quebec, Montreal, Saint John, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Wasington DC, I go to museums.

Saint John has a great museum. I look forward to a visit to Halifax so I can go to the museum to learn about the great explosion I have read about in books.

I just finished listening to the podcast and wanted to clarify something. I live just outside Saint John (with no 's' on the end and Saint is never abbreviated). This is where you were - in the province of New Brunswick. We border on the state of Maine. It is about an hour's drive away. St. John's (with an 's' at the end and St. is always abbreviated) is in Newfoundland, another province that you didn't visit.
It sounds like from your description, that you ate at Grannan's in Market Square. All of our restaurants are not that expensive. Next time (or if you are recommending to your clients) I suggest you try the Saint John Alehouse right next door, Lemongrass (Thai food) also in Market Square but down a level, or grab a bite in the Saint John City market. It's like a smaller version of Quincy market in Boston. Also have them check out Java Moose in the market or nearer the ship on Prince William St. - much better coffee than Tim Hortons.
I'm glad you had a sunny day to enjoy our city and that you were saved from travelling to the suburban mall - shopping uptown (what we call our downtown) is much better.
I don't know what excursions are offered in Halifax but there is a great kayaking excursion offered here in the Bay of Fundy and I believe it is combined with a lobster cookout as well.
Ouch on the international roaming charges too. I always make sure to turn off my data on my cellphone when we are in the US because that is what would happen to us too. Exciting to hear about the free wireless in the parks now because I will be able to use the internet on my phone there now where I couldn't before.

I can imagine that it might be difficult for people to not take criticism of their country to heart. It reminds me of how there was such a strong increase in patriotism after 9-11. It also reminds me of the reaction people had towards a group of Japanese tourists who were talking during the flag ceremony at Disneyland a few weeks ago. When we take pride in where we live and how we are viewed, it can hurt to hear negative thoughts despite the person's intentions.

I have never been to Canada, but the places mentioned in in some of these threads sound awesome (one of Shakespeare's homes?). I am definitely going to call hockeymomNS or Applemomma if I ever venture up north! :thumbsup2

I haven't listened to the review yet but I was in the backseat and it was an adventure!

My favorite part was how we needed to see Newfoundland! They have forests and fjords there!

It was quite the ride but my company was wonderful!

I couldn't stop laughing. I didn't know if I should feel guilty for laughing at their expense! But Kevin isn't the only one who gets weird stranger encounters. I get it a lot. Yesterday, in fact. I was in the middle of backing out of the Panera lot when some guy pointed towards me and gestured, like maybe I had something wrong with my car. Nothing was wrong. The guy was insane, and I got out of there after trying unsuccessfully trying to interpret the string of words that didn't make sense. I think he was going to tell me a sob story for money, so I booked it out of there.

As for the servers on the ship, did you guys tell the Head Server that your serving team needed to dial it back? I think that's what he/she is there for. The rating thing would have taken me aback, too.

On the plus side, you weren't robbed by the cab driver in Halifax, so I call that excellent podcast story fodder. :thumbsup2

AHEM...........................................

(I think they've gotten rid of that part of town btw...)

. All of our restaurants are not that expensive.

Ouch on the international roaming charges too.

May I suggest o any future cruisers to Saint John Big Tide Brewing Company. http://www.bigtidebrew.com/. We go there more than once each trip for good food at reasonable cost and good beer. It is just a couple blocks from the ship and it has free wifi.
When we enter Canada, we turn off the cellular on the phone and iPad and easily find wifi in different places several times a day.

I was under the impression that because my ipad worked, that my usage was covered under my plan.

Boy, was I wrong.
