Can your luggage use Magical Express without you??

We are now contemplating renting a car for our upcoming vacation. It sure would be nice if we didn't have to retrieve our luggage and it just appeared in our room sometime that evening. Also, we would love to check it in at the hotel (using one of the preferred airlines) when returning home. Anyone know if this is possible??

Let me just beat Edd to the punch here:

The official word from Disney is indeed 'NO', as katieelder has said.

Anecdotal evidence would suggest that some people have indeed sent their luggage, and ridden a towncar or rental.*****

Could Disney decide to close this loophole and NOT send your luggage if you don't get on the bus? YES. And they could do that at anytime they'd like.

Personally, I would not risk it. If I'm tagging my luggage, I'm riding the bus. If a rental car is a necessity, why not use Alamo or National, and pick up your car the next day, on Disney property?

One fact beyond dispute is that you CAN use Resort Airline Check-in regardless of how you get back to the airport. Disney says you DON'T need to ride the DME bus back to the airport in order to use the Resort Airline Check-in service.

Disney has gone on the record as saying that DME is not a luggage transfer service...that you may not book a luggage transfer. We have been told that there have been people that have signed up for DME and not been on the bus, but their luggage has gotten to the resort. As was stated previously, Disney could change that at any time. I am sure that they have it in their realm of possibility to be able to track who is on the bus, and who isn't, and then hold the luggage that belongs to the 'who isn't' group at the airport. Are they doing that now? No. So....take your chances.

What we do is take ME then rent from one of the On-sight or DTD hotel locations.

Another option is for one person to get the rental and all the rest go on ME.

They may not release any luggage until someone on the ressie is scanned into the bus by the bus driver. And if luggage is missing and no record of any one being on the bus this would also cause a conflict.
